well, I dont have either so doubt you'd want a downgrade

pale sigil

As a gift I would ;) ;)

#

Jokes aside Ive been re evaluating, I have used my computer a handful times in two months and for gaming probably 1-3 hours this month.

#

Played the most this week I've played in ages (2 hours)

#

Steam says 10 hours the last two weeks, most of it me leaving cyberpunk open when I was modding it havo

Forgot about that.

Off topic question but maybe some of y'all can point me in the right direction. I want to record an application like how nvidia shadowplay records. It records all the time but footage older than 5 minutes gets deleted automatically so it doesn't fill up storage. Does anyone know if I can setup something like that within OBS?

cursive summit
#

OBS afaik is press to record

ashen spindle
#

why not use shadowplay

cursive summit
#

You can set up Nvidia Share I think to save the recording only on click though

neat cove
cursive summit
#

What

#

It's a screen recording software?

neat cove
cursive summit
#

Can't you make use of a key shortcut where it only records and saves specific moments?

#

I know my AMD thing has that, where it will constantly record the footage but only save it if you press a key shortcut

neat cove
cursive summit
#

That feature should in no way be usable only in supported applications

#

Makes no sense

neat cove
cursive summit
#

When you say "supported applications"

#

Do you mean "not fullscreen applications"?

neat cove
#

Yes, Shadowplay can record fullscreen all the time but I need to record only the non fullscreen application and nothing else. That is possible for non fullscreen applications if they are supported.

cursive summit
#

Hard to give advice something I've never touched in my life, namely, Shadowplay

#

Shouldn't be an issue on Radeon's recording software

neat cove

Hm, no problem. I though maybe OBS had such a setting but I couldn't find anything on it myself.

It's no where near that in real life ever.

120 is not the cap by any means

not bad

vagrant pagoda

That's what I get out my dock

It's gen 2x2

So 20 gbps

It will do 500mb/s on sata ssds

Wait

The sata is 2x1

My m.2 is 2x2

It will do almost full speed drive to drive.

It's a 2 disk dock.

shadow minnow

then you'd want to wait for a HOF or kingping-replacement card anyway

a usb2 kvm is just usually shit and also if you use it for more than just the keyboard you are lacking bandwidth

that's the one I will get...

pale sigil

USB3 hubs can still cause some issues

THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF USB, BRUH :')

halcyon moss

huh? yeah..

wheat plume

I wonder how they would react at the fact you could use the same cable for multiple keyboards if they are able to have the cable detached

vocal cipher

why are you having this conversation with someone who simply isn't interested in that kind of stuff?

wheat plume

they use Linux

wheat plume

but they just got a new keyboard and they said they needed to shut down the computer to plug it out and plug the new one in 🤦‍♀️

Wot

u dont on linux either

that particular

halcyon moss

you might have needed to do it when it was still ps2

yeh

we all know USB is the old standard

USB is for thumb drives

windows being used free or not already gives them other oppurtunities too

Linux is only good for one thing, and that's enterprise

No?

I see it super convoluted for normal use cases

pale sigil

What do you consider enterprise

Businesses that create or design and maintain a product

That's where Linux does well

stark bobcat

those numbers are very misleading considering telling the truth in those situations can end up very poorly for the victim

ashen spindle

that too, unreported numbers are very tricky in such cases

shadow minnow

Last gen I wanted to get a 80 card

#

Now the price difference is too small to justify the drop in performance

#

If the 80 costed as much as last gen would get it

ashen spindle

literally dont have reviews of it yet so how would you know the difference after its OC'd

shadow minnow
#

Bigger performance smaller price difference
Doubt OCing is gonna do enough, but we will see with reviews ofc

#

Though hmm I should consider AMD

#

Probably will

astral haven
#

if it has enough performance to run all the games you need on your monitor, then it doesnt matter how it gets there

#

amd has always been an option, the 6900xt right now looks pretty darn good

and 7000 series could do pretty well

I have the Eve spectrum which is same panel as lg 950 or what was it

Ngl I wish I had the glossy version too, it looks so much better imo

vagrant pagoda

I haven't been impressed with most of the high refresh rate fald stuff

shadow minnow

It’s not true 10 bit but better than nothing

astral haven
vagrant pagoda

Yeah but most fast paced games you don't notice the banding

shadow minnow

Glossy >> Matte for color and especially blacks
And many zones >>>> one or only few zones

vagrant pagoda

And in atmospheric games you don't need the high refresh rate

at the very least FE cards will be at MSRP

vagrant pagoda

maybe the case in the US, here the site for FE and aib cards wasn't even slow loading so they managed traffic quite well this time

vagrant pagoda
#

Checkout is the slow part

ashen spindle
#

nah, checkout was the was part that always was fast when I tried getting 30 series card there

#

and 30 series cards during mining were gone within seconds

sharp badger
#

Yeah

#

But a few places are waiting for cards to arrive at shops atm.

#

But the prices have been true from when they started showing up

ashen spindle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯ the store had FE at msrp and at least 3 models that also met MSRP so I assume there will be some aib cards that also his the msrp for the 4080

sharp badger
#

MSI 4080 gaming trio is priced at 1700€ at the shop i'm looking at

shadow minnow
#

Cheapest 4090s seem to be 1700£ here which is like 1950€

ashen spindle
#

yup thats msrp

sharp badger
#

4080 Tuf is priced at 1800€~

shadow minnow
#

That’s weird

#

4090 tuf is 1900€

#

And much better performance

#

Or well 1940€

astral haven
sharp badger
#

Yeah the 4090 TUF is priced at 2000€~

ashen spindle
#

the shop here only lists cards if they are in stock now so cant tell you which ones were the 4090s that matched msrp or what 4080 will match it here

shadow minnow
ashen spindle
#

but they will match it

shadow minnow
#

Nvidia tends to list official prices of AIB GPUs sometimes

#

Which is where I take tuf being 1700£ from

#

Which is the card I am considering rn

#

Unless AHOC tells it’s bad

#

Then May get an FE instead

#

AHOC videos are great

sharp badger
#

I really like the FE editions

#

But a few AIBs look great too

shadow minnow
#

If FE had 2 HDMIs would definitely go for FE

#

FE is pretty good in terms of VRMs too

#

Way better than palit game rock

sharp badger
#

I like the Zotac one

astral haven
#

its a shame how not good the vrms are of not the fe

shadow minnow
#

It depends on the card, but on palit they are really bad

sharp badger
#

The Galax cards looks interesting with the extra fan on the back

shadow minnow
#

Nvidia fe May be only card with just multi layer capacitors on the back of the pcb under GPU due

#

Which is good for the FE

sharp badger
#

and Gigabyte Aorus master with the display

#

Yeah

shadow minnow
#

Gigabyte used to have 3 HDMIs but no more pepecry

sharp badger
#

Is there any video of the Hof card?

astral haven
#

this is the 3090 hof

shadow minnow
#

Gamerock card produces more heat at 600A than FE at 800A

astral haven
#

i think they renamed it the hof ocl tho a few gens ago but 🤷

shadow minnow
#

Or well to specify the VRM

#

The chip itself no

#

But VRM does

astral haven
#

no

shadow minnow
#

No I said that wrong

#

The VRM of the gamerock card produces more heat at 600A than vrm of FE at 800A

ashen spindle
#

gamerock isnt even a company

#

thats the model name lmfao

shadow minnow
#

The card isn’t most expensive but more expensive than FE

#

And only thing that’s better is memory VRMs which are already good enough on FE

ashen spindle
#

based on google cache it was listed for the same price as FE

shadow minnow
#

Well even for same price it sucks

astral haven
#

🤷 welcome to aibs

ashen spindle

I wouldnt say it sucks based on it just using worse vrm, the cooler is still performing better so for most people it would be a better option

why?

VESA Releases DisplayPort 2.1 Specification Latest DisplayPort specification provides greater alignment with USB Type-C and USB4; BEAVERTON, Ore. – October 17, 2022 – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) announced today that it has released DisplayPort 2.1, the latest version of the DisplayPort specification, which is backward com...

#

but I thought 2.1 couldn't possibly be a thing 😏

astral haven
#

"all previously certified DisplayPort 2.0 products including UHBR (Ultra-high Bit Rate) capable products – whether GPUs, docking station chips, monitor scalar chips, PHY repeater chips such as re-timers, or DP40/DP80 cables (including both passive and active, and using full-size DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort or USB Type-C connectors) – have already been certified to the stricter DisplayPort 2.1 spec."

#

its not a thing

#

its like usb 3.2 5gbps

ashen spindle
#

yeah its supposedly helping cable length as the one thing that stood out to me

#

@shadow minnow told you it'll be a thing and just be minor changes and not double bandwidth

cursive summit
#

Wait a second

#

The USB-C has higher bandwidth than the actual DP connector

#

Or what

astral haven
#

those are renders

#

the 80g usb c cable doesnt currently exist

shadow minnow
#

Yeah so it’s almost just a rename

ashen spindle
#

no?

#

DSC has been a thing for a long time

astral haven
#

displayport 1.3 introduced it

shadow minnow
#

I hoped only UHBR 20 only would classify as DP 2.1

#

But it’s all versions

astral haven
#

obviously

#

rip

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

🤷 8k 120hz

#

speak for yourself 😛

shadow minnow
#

Same for HDMI 8k60

ashen spindle
#

visually lossless compression*

shadow minnow
#

HDMI 2.1 can only do 8k30

#

12bpc

#

Without compression

ashen spindle
#

also HDMI has a fee attached to it, its not an open standard

astral haven
#

and yea displayport compression is possible to be lossless where hdmi cant yet afaik

#

you need subsampling

shadow minnow
#

DP 2.1 UHBR 20 >>> HDMI 2.1
HDMI 2.1 >> DP 1.4
HDMI 2.1 > DP 2.0 UHBR 10

ashen spindle
#

and dp2.0 can do 80

shadow minnow
#

Depends on your card

#

DP 1.4 can do like 34, 2.0 can do 80

astral haven
#

just buy the monitor depending on what you need lel

shadow minnow
#

But lower spec of 2.0 can only do 40

#

Which is same as lower spec of HDMI 2.1

astral haven
#

yea but I want high refresh rate and high resolution

#

4k240hz no chroma bs is goated

shadow minnow
#

Yeah then it really doenst matter dogekek

astral haven
#

any game with dlss 😛

shadow minnow
#

Well many indie games and such

#

Depends

astral haven
#

spoken like a true 1080p user

shadow minnow
#

Frame generation can look bad yes

#

Because you need that for 1080p dogekek

astral haven
#

"Update 1/6: HDMI Forum has notified us that the HDMI 2.1 uses DSC 1.2 compression for everything higher than 8K with 4:2:0 chroma sub sampling."

shadow minnow
#

HDMI could probably do max 8k45 8bpc without compression

ashen spindle
#

or, just use compression when needed since so far people are not able to see a difference

astral haven
#

the argument was use hdmi bc no compression needed lel

shadow minnow
#

Which is indeed incorrect

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah, just like to keep pointing it out 😛

shadow minnow
#

And HDMI compression is not visually lossless either

#

So it’s actually visible

astral haven
#

no?

#

afaik they are using the same compression

shadow minnow
#

Does HDMI have DSC?

astral haven
#

yep

shadow minnow
#

Oh then it’s visually lossless too nvm

ashen spindle
astral haven
#

dsc 1.2 same as dp 1.4

shadow minnow
#

Thought since anything above 8k is 4:2:0 it may only have chroma subsampling

astral haven
#

subsampling isnt really considered compression

shadow minnow
#

But since that’s not the case technically HDMI 2.1 does allow you to go higher than DP 1.4 both with compression dogekek

astral haven
#

afaik no it doesnt

#

dont think hdmi is certifying any 4k240hz monitors yet

#

gotta remember hdmi only allows specific things to be certified

shadow minnow
#

Yes but with compression it could probably do 8k120

#

At 8bpc

astral haven
#

it could if it was allowed to

shadow minnow
#

True

#

But if it was could go up to 8k135
While DP could do 8k90

#

Which both are pretty high dogekek

#

With DLSS 8k gaming is far from impossible too

#

Saw someone testing it, even without DLSS on high details most games were playable (above 30)

astral haven
#

"most"

#

you mean of the games that were even able to switch into that mode lel

shadow minnow
#

True

#

Also saw someone trying to get RDR2 to 12k

astral haven
#

12k how?

#

downsampling or multimonitor?

shadow minnow
#

Idk, since no monitor can support that

#

Probably down sampling not sure

astral haven
#

i have forgotten to try gaming at 8k240hz downsampled

#

god i really cant wait for reprojection based "dlss 3"

#

valve and occulus both have separately proven they can actually do input latency less than frametime, we just need that on flatscreen

#

30 fps at 8k is actually fine in a lot of games

#

mouse to photon delay

#

except in this case its more head movement to photon delay

#

yes which is why i said input latency

#

Asynchronous reprojection is a class of motion interpolation techniques aimed ensuring a virtual reality headset's responsiveness to user motion even when the GPU isn't able to keep up with the headset's target framerate, and to reduce perceived input lag at all times regardless of framerate. Reprojection involves the headset's driver taking one...

#

and in beatsaber my mean is 0ms

#

except the location of the controllers is where my hands are +-2ms from 0ms

#

nope

#

you dont understand

#

it predicts where my hands will be based on how long it took the previous frame to render and where my hands have been moving
then the computer renders the frame as it would be in the future

#

and it works insanely well

#

also this isnt correct
i use index so my controllers are 60hz absolute positioning and 240hz relative positioning

#

20-40ms is assuming just absolute positioning

#

the relative positioning is significantly faster

#

also 60hz does mean mean latency without timewarp is at least 8ms

#

yes

sharp badger
astral haven
#

looks like it takes 20ms to complete a scan, and 20ms to reset, so its 25hz scan rate

google

because thats just the spatial positioning
