fair gull
#

thats where all the fucking THC pins poke out

shadow minnow
#

I don’t think it’s an outer layer either tbh

#

But probably depends on mobo

vagrant pagoda
#

You have power and ground solid traces on the outside to help shield signal on the inside

shadow minnow
#

Yes but I don’t think you’d have this power there

fair gull
#

tbf ive never looked close at the backside for traces and stuff

shadow minnow
#

You may have 3V on bottom

astral haven
#

It's usually control, ground, core, ground data, ground then as many layers alternating data and ground or just data as you need

fair gull
#

that sounds more reasonable

astral haven
#

But there are plenty of motherboards that are perfectly happy at 500 amps through the vrm

fair gull
astral haven
#

No

astral haven
#

It's still under the soldermask

fair gull
#

im aware of soldermask

#

but it has to go to caps etc on the backside aswell

#

since ive never taken those off id assume they use vias

astral haven
#

And the ultra high speed data can often be on outer layers to deal with capacitance magic

fair gull
#

to go to some power plane

vagrant pagoda
#

There are mosfets on the back too

#

Switching 12v

fair gull
#

see my message before yours

vagrant pagoda
#

Which is worst than vcore for a short

astral haven
vagrant pagoda
#

Also the pins for more of the power connectors are though holes

vagrant pagoda
#

Not talking vcore

astral haven
#

No
It is extremely rare

vagrant pagoda
#

I mean half the x670e boards I've seen have mosfets on the back

shadow minnow
#

Also having vcore on the bottom would cause some issues when you hav SMD VRMs on top.
Since you would make a lot of area unusable for other traces, to prevent high resistance

astral haven
astral haven
#

Generally there are multiple vcore planes

fair gull
#

maybe i should see if theres any opensource mobos

vagrant pagoda
#

You'd be hard pressed to find many high-end boards wjtbouth any 12v switching in the back.

fair gull
#

define high end

astral haven
#

Literally every server board ever tbh

fair gull
#

is server board high end

#

or is it just a different target market

astral haven
#

They are high end

fair gull
#

imo id put enterprise grade equipment in its own section

#

seeing how a lot of server boards didnt have UEFI for a long long time either

astral haven
#

That's not true

fair gull
#

literally have a hp g8 and g9

#

both of which i cant run uefi on

astral haven
#

Just because hp limits you from using the uefi doesn't mean the board doesn't support it

fair gull
#

ah for all those server owners who write custom firmware

#

server and workstation just isnt made for the same reasons gaming motherboards are

#

theres a focus on high reliability and usually also ease of repairibility to some degree

astral haven
#

Yes
And back then uefi was a downgrade that provided no benefit

fair gull
#

id say it still doesnt really

vagrant pagoda
#

Not having UEFI boot mode dosent mean it dosent have UEFI

astral haven
#

Nah
Booting from big drives is useful
And inumerating hundreds of devices basically was impossible on bios

fair gull
#

well in the specific case of hp they stated its legacy bios

astral haven
#

My Dell runs it's legacy bios on top of a uefi shell

fair gull
#

i wish id even get a uefi shell

#

but as mentioned i have noticed no difference in anything really

#

i can network boot fine

#

disks get recognized fine

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah I doubt there just normal bios under there

#

Especially for boardwell

fair gull
#

the only shitty thing would be the IPMI/iLo which sucks on the really really old g7 i had

astral haven
#

And generally is an entirely separate unit from the bios

fair gull
vagrant pagoda
#

Hp would be basically writing and supporting the bios entirely for the selves

astral haven
#

Or they wrote it already and now they aren't supporting it any more lel

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah

#

But generally you start with Intel/amds reference bios

fair gull
#

i mean every now and again theres small updates trickling in for fan adjustments and shit

vagrant pagoda
#

And make your own

fair gull
#

id wish for a g10

#

better ilo and full uefi support including uefi boot

vagrant pagoda
#

And I don't think Intel still has making legacy only bios then

#

It would of been uefi

astral haven
#

They do the basic writing

fair gull
#

im no bios hacker

#

all i can do is manually flash it

#

and that one time i repaired a laptop bios in hxd

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

There definetly was on the low end

#

If you meant broadwell that is

fair gull
#

maybe one day

#

ill have a g10

#

i can dream

vagrant pagoda
#

Did low end board support boardwell?

#

There wernt any low-end broadwell chips

astral haven
fair gull
#

also why are we debating over servers that are 8+ yrs old

astral haven
#

These are nooooooooooooot high end chips lmao

vagrant pagoda
#

Huh

fair gull
#

like ive seen big g9 servers have uefi

vagrant pagoda
#

I thought the didn't have any quads

fair gull
#

my small 1u one doesnt

#

so anyone got like 3 grand to kit out a g10

Recommendations for an "inexpensive" pair of wireless headphones for jogging?
Comfortable (I wouldn't mind over ear instead of on ear)
USB-C charging
Android compatible (lol)
I don't mind crazy neon colours.

I don't - I really, really don't. It causes a pressure difference to me like going through a tunnel or flying. And then there's all the ear wax. I just want them resting ON my ears instead of drilling inside.

Or actually I don't want either - I was asking about over ear 😄

Buying a gaming chair is surprisingly difficult.

Went online to check out my local electronics stores - Found a chair for a good price. Ordered it. Accidentally used my old address and had to phone them to correct it.

Sure - We can change the address... also did we mention we only do curbside delivery? Also we can't upgrade it to "carry in and install" cause it's too small. Also we can't have it ready at your local BRAND HERE store (which is like 15mins away on foot), but we can mail it to the MEGASTORE right next door instead.

If you ask me

cursive summit

What

Are you talking about

shadow minnow

4080 pricing including VAT

cursive summit

1600?

#

Shouldn't be that much

shadow minnow

If you don’t want the lowest end model at least

astral haven

1200 + vat > is less than 1500 normally

shadow minnow
#

Yes

cursive summit
shadow minnow
#

But that’s for the lowest end models

cursive summit
#

Lowest end models aren't the worst models

shadow minnow
#

And I also have to get a waterblock pepecry

astral haven

the founders models are fine

cursive summit

There won't be an FE model for 4080

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

Didn’t have last gen

#

If they don’t I definitely won’t get them

cursive summit
#

The 12GB 4080 is confirmed to not have an Nvidia model

astral haven

so you have dumb requirements
thats not the same as the models being bad

cursive summit
#

16GB 4080 I don't remember having an FE model either

shadow minnow
#

Yes is not bad

#

I said true to them being fine

#

However I have two monitors that need HDMI 2.1 to run without compression

#

And I won’t be getting 4090

astral haven
#

have you considered
getting an adapter?

shadow minnow

Won’t run without compression

Adapt what?

DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.1?

shadow minnow

4K144 10BPC

astral haven
shadow minnow
astral haven

no it wont

shadow minnow
#

DP1.4 can handle max 4K98hz 10bpc

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

anything hdmi 2.1 can do, dp 1.4 can

shadow minnow
#

Not without compression

astral haven
#

dp 1.4 is significantly more bandwidth

shadow minnow
#

?? HDMI 2.1 has higher bandwidth

shadow minnow
cursive summit
#

DisplayPort 1.4 a maximum total bandwidth of 32.4Gbps
HDMI 2.1 significantly increases HDMI's maximum bandwidth up to 48 gigabits/second (Gbps)

shadow minnow
#

It is significantly higher than HDMI 2.0 yes

#

But lower than 2.1

ashen spindle
#

keep in mind the hdmi 2.1 brand changed what it does

cursive summit

What are we talking about lads

oh yea my mistake i was thinking of dp 2.0

shadow minnow

Unfortunately new GPUs don’t have DP 2.0 yet 😦

DP 2.0 is not featured in RTX 4000

shadow minnow

AMD will have them though, so

ashen spindle
#

please enlighten me what color accurate thing you do on your secondary monitor that display stream compression is not good enough for that

shadow minnow
#

DSC can make text look bad

#

Can

#

Doesn’t always

astral haven
#

no it cant

shadow minnow
#

It’s not loseless

astral haven
#

dsc is lossless

shadow minnow
#

Anyways rather no compression than compression

ashen spindle
#

bro what text are you looking at that looks bad at 8 over 10bit

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

no

shadow minnow
#

Yes

astral haven
#

its actually lossless

shadow minnow
#

Look it up

ashen spindle
#

and that also needs your secondary screen to run at 144 to read the text?

astral haven
#

we have had this argument before

#

it is lossless

#

mathematically

shadow minnow
#

It is not lossless

astral haven
#

[citation needed]

shadow minnow
#

It doesn’t carry over all data

astral haven
#

[citation needed]

#

vesa's paper explains how it works

ashen spindle
#

I dont care about the compression that is actuall visually the same based on what my eyes can tell, what are you doing that a secondary screen needs to run at 4k144 10bit to read text

shadow minnow
#

Unlikely visible

astral haven
#

its a similar principle to png compression, but aloooot faster and less compressive

shadow minnow
ashen spindle
astral haven
shadow minnow
astral haven
#

png specifically doesnt

ashen spindle
#

you are going to watch 144hz10bit 4k movies on your secondary screen?

shadow minnow
shadow minnow
#

Probably not but I’ll just rather take no compression over compression if given choice

#

I’ll still probably be running screen at 14410bpc 4K

ashen spindle
#

to be clear its all about the secondary screen yes

shadow minnow
#

But yes i would basically not notice it most likely tbf

#

It’s just when I have a choice I rather don’t want compression

#

But yes It doesn’t matter much

ashen spindle
#

since the one hdmi port is 2.1

shadow minnow
#

If I didn’t have a choice wouldn’t really care

#

Anyways I really gtg

ashen spindle
#

you are basically giving yourself a placebo when you think you'll see a difference

astral haven
#

except not even that
they are predicting they will have the placebo effect from something they have never used

ashen spindle
#

(on the secondary screen aswell) since the first one will run at full speed

astral haven
#

that too

ashen spindle
#

man is running a 11900k on igpu and doesnt want to get a 4080 FE because the secondary screen would use DSC

astral haven
#

🤣

cursive summit
#

What 4080FE

#

12GB isn't getting one

astral haven
#

reference not fe

cursive summit
#

16GB is not confirmed either

ashen spindle
#

yes it is

#

based on nvidias website

astral haven
#

nvidia had a pic for the 1060 fe

#

and it didnt come to market

cursive summit
#

1060 FE?

ashen spindle
#

not based on a picture, they have specs listed for it unlike the 12gb where it only says depends on AiB

astral haven
#

at least at retail

ashen spindle
#

also we just had evga drop out and we know nvidia would like to be the only vendor without having to do any support, they're sharing the same PCB for 90 and 16gb

astral haven
#

1050 not 1050ti

ashen spindle
#

4090/16/12 on the 40 series specsheet

astral haven
#

yea
the 1050 fe was never more than a render
no specs like that

ashen spindle
#

now I do wonder if there is some video where one half is normal and the other side is altered to simulate DSC to show the (lack of) difference in visuals

astral haven
#

how would you send the video tho

#

youd have to distribute it somehow

ashen spindle
#

well you'd run the DSC algo over every frame, save it, then play it on a non DSC using monitor

astral haven
#

how would you store the video tho

#

i suppose you could take still frames

ashen spindle
#

idk surely something in ffmpeg exists that you could put it on git as something to view, maybe not play with VLC by default but just comparing images would be fine

astral haven
#

ffmpeg by definition is compression

#

it supports lossless h265 but thats the same as dsc basically

crimson wigeon
#

just save png frames

astral haven
#

sure

#

but what video player supports playing png video lmao

crimson wigeon
#

Fine, good old huffyuv then

astral haven

that is compression tho

#

at least by this definition

convert image to flac and listen to the colors

Alongside the arrival of RTX 4000 series cards, Nvidia revealed the new DLSS 3. ▶ Play video
astral haven
#

its pretty hype to know that they arent using game engine motion vectors

stark bobcat
#

I don't think I'd use this but I am not the target audience

astral haven
#

yea this is basically just for folks with 240hz 4k or 1440p and modern games that cant hit that due to cpu bottlenecks

ashen spindle
#

its nvidia foundry so I personally will wait for a review and not a first look of the tech

thick elk
#

Especially when Nvidia Cherry-picks the games / settings / resolutions and probably has to approve prior to publication.

ashen spindle
#

someone posted that a week ago, wish it didnt come true lmfao

astral haven
#

isnt that a picture from dlss 1 tho? (not fsr)

thick elk
#

I looked at the original nvidia demo and when viewing it at full ress the ghosting around objects occluding / disoccluding is really noticable / distracting

stark bobcat
thick elk
#

It only smooths out visuals which kind of is less important at higher frame-rates / increases imput lag at lower frame-rates.
So there is that.

astral haven
#

yep

ashen spindle
#

idk where either are from, I'd like to see all upscaling be looked at very closely, not analyze it and suddenly with dlss3 first look they just ignore when it happens xD

astral haven
#

?

#

df was the first to report on the quality of checkerboard rendering

#

back in the ps4 days lel

thick elk
#

Digital foundry makes some good content sure but they can be real shills as well.

ashen spindle
#

I know im saying dlss gets looked at more favourably than anything else from them

thick elk
#

For example total war warhammer III's performance at launch was disgusting.
Of course they didn't cover it because they had a sponsored video about the game instead.

ashen spindle
#

and other solutions would get more criticism form them

thick elk
#

In practice the differences between dlss 2 and fsr2 are definitely there but they are also somewhat minor.

astral haven
#

and they were very reserved about dlss 1
you gotta remember, that by the numbers, dlss 1 was more accurate than dlss 2
it just looked bad because it erred on the side of blurry not sharp

thick elk
#

dlss 1 was garbage in general, I don't think anyone had anything positive to say about it.

astral haven
#

dlss 1 had absolutely insanely high pssim scores tho

#

mathematically it was more accurate
visually it was obviously bad, but as an image decompression alg its insane

#

I still cant wait for true rt engines

thick elk
#

True RT engines will probably only come halfway through the next console generation.

astral haven
#

nah

#

i mean like blender style progressive rendering

#

except with continuous progressive rendering

thick elk
#

I thought game engines, fair enough

astral haven
#

yea i mean in a game engine

#

obviously its already in blender

thick elk
#

Thing is with current console hardware being quite limited in it's rt capabilities and games having to work on the lowest common denominator I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

astral haven
#

thats very not correct

#

all of the hardware is quite capable of 1spp at 4k120 in even relatively complex environments

#

The problem is all the everything is extremely optimized for raster rendering

ashen spindle
#

the issue I had with the DF video was when they said that the artefacts and flaws in the generated imaged are no big deal really since they are so short and are sandwiched by real frames, which isn't totally wrong but it happening every other frame potentially will still be noticed and if this was FSR they would've hammered on it instead of saying it almost doesnt matter

#

then allowing to show framerate % change to show 500% number instead of actual fps I also just dont like for what is represented as an explanation

#

aka I would've liked stuff they would've never gotten the ok from nvidia for so they wont bite the hand that feeds them as the only media that gets such early access xD

thick elk
#

They also probably won't shift their tone on release when they are allowed to show everything

crimson wigeon
#

But DLSS good! A must-have feature!

stark bobcat
#

for some

cursive summit
#

I heard that DLSS 3 hammers latency

#

I wonder by how much

i will say this always good to tram the bed first if possible, then probe it; because, you can still have issues with just probe. For example: I could not print a model because of a poorly trammed bed at really any speed, only after tramming I could print it. Probe is always traditionally meant for minor inconsistencies at best, some companies seem to have abused that. Bed is quite flat in my case, just the the refrigerator magnet might have some contamination or a little of adhesion issue. Sadly in my case I cannot tram the bed, it is way worse than springs which already are awful to deal with. That is besides the fact both methods are rigidly mounted.

The refund policy on the face of it seems rather nice:
"We will be offering refunds for all Stadia hardware purchases (Stadia Controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages)"
"Most hardware purchases (Stadia Controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages) made directly from Google will not need to be returned. "

Basically, this would net me a free controller on my shelf and a Chromecast for free when I got the premiere edition for 22 last year.

anything wired works for gaming it's such a low bar

gusty kiln

magni is out of the question then

650 is better

coarse robin

I understand

650 also needs more power

coarse robin

ah okay

oh is that the adapted it comes with

# final flame yes

okay but are those two necessary? or would you say the headphones alone would be a big enough improvement

empty wren
#

You need them in general

final flame
#

the dac is necessary to even use the amp

#

and the dac will also prevent electrical noise

coarse robin
#

could you recommend a dac too? ❤️
