vagrant pagoda
#

that system could OCP a 1200w psu

astral haven
#

look same die size, same core model, it must be the same silicon

vagrant pagoda
#

those wernt launched at the same time lol

astral haven
#

the fkn 9600k was twice as thick, obviously it isnt the same silicon (it wasnt twice as thick it was like 1mm taller)

astral haven
vagrant pagoda
#

im not talking about the 280 or 290

#

im talking 7970 and 7950

astral haven
#

🤷

#

i dont know the exact details of those

vagrant pagoda
#

i had the 290xs with a 1090t and it was bottle necking, then when i went to a 4970k it would trip over power on the 1000w, moved to a 1200w, then oced more, and then it still ocped

astral haven
#

but all the press said the 280x and 280 were 7970 and 7950 refreshes respectively

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

and the 280 and 280x are provably different

vagrant pagoda
#

the firto bag was actually structural

#

i had a socket heater on there held in place with that lol

astral haven
#

gigabyte soc force

#

not having the ln2 edition for shame

vagrant pagoda
#

yeah z97

astral haven
#

tho i cant say shit since I also dont have the ln2 edition

vagrant pagoda
#

24/7 heavy oc with no vrm block = blown vrm

astral haven
#

what

#

you have the force right?

vagrant pagoda
#

the normal force has a block

#

the ln2 dosent fit the block

astral haven
#

yes

vagrant pagoda
#

this was 990fx ud7 number 4 i think

astral haven
#

but the ln2 doesnt need vrm cooling

vagrant pagoda
#

it dose for what i used it for

astral haven
#

990fx drew what was it 2.5x the current?

vagrant pagoda
#

which was 24/7 sub ambiant cooled oc

astral haven
#

3x?

vagrant pagoda
#

the 990 us7s where tanks

#

they all would run stock clocks missing a vrm stage

#

and not once killed a cpu

astral haven
#

250w at 1.5v on fx vs 200w at 2.6v on 4th gen

vagrant pagoda
#

only 1.5?

astral haven
#

i mean both of those were reasonable dailies

vagrant pagoda
#

1,44 was under load

#

i thought it was higher

astral haven
#

yea

#

fx was before what we knew what vdroop was

#

lel

vagrant pagoda
#

lol

#

the 990 had llc

#

this was my partner in crime

astral haven
#

ofc

vagrant pagoda
#

chiller + cooler as res outside

#

with a second loop running into the system

astral haven
#

yea ive never actually done anything that wasnt rock solid for overclocking

#

chiller aint gonna work for me

vagrant pagoda
#

how so

#

it ran 24/7 for 5 + years

astral haven
#

oh yea chillers can run solid

vagrant pagoda
#

the pc hardware had issues

#

not the cooling

astral haven
#

but good luck getting anything rock solid stable that also needs a chiller to be stable

vagrant pagoda
#

the z97 was stable the whole time

#

same with the 290xs

#

have all of it

astral haven
#

and it wasnt stable on ambient water?

vagrant pagoda
#

the 4790k+z97 run my plex server now with the 1050s

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

fair enough

vagrant pagoda
#

i had to get a silverston 1200w running on 220v to get it to be stable

#

as there wasnt anything with more 12v at the time lol

astral haven
#

well either way, you werent running 500w through the cpu so you did not need vrm cooling

vagrant pagoda
#

its not the stages

#

its the traces

#

i had a msi before the gig in 990fx

#

and i burnt 3 of them up

#

internal traces cooked

#

even with vrm block

astral haven
#

yes and how many amps was that...

vagrant pagoda
#

i moved to a case with a rear socket fan

#

and got the 990x ud7

#

and it blew vrm stages once every 3-4 months

astral haven
#

yes

vagrant pagoda
#

gig always rmaed them

astral haven
#

but how many amps were you running through it

vagrant pagoda
#

but it never stopped running

#

lol

#

well it would power cycle

#

but would boot right back up

#

i never ran oc with a missing stage though

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

you were probably above 200 right?

vagrant pagoda
#

i had to move the 15 gauge for the eps 8 pin after i melted the sleeving off them

astral haven
#

im talking about vcore

vagrant pagoda
#

i showed you

astral haven
#

amps

vagrant pagoda
#

was 1.4-1.5 under load

astral haven
#

not volts

#

remember 4th gen was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay kinder to vrms

vagrant pagoda
#

nah

#

just better designs

astral haven
#

do the math ion

vagrant pagoda
#

my 990fx had crap for setup compared to the power delivery on the z97

astral haven
#

the soc non force only had 4 powerstages and it was perfectly fine

#

the soc force and force ln2 were omega overkill

#

it was haaaaaaaaaaaard to break 100 amps

vagrant pagoda
#

the 990fx had shitty power stages

#

they were about half as effeicnt as the ir powerstages in the soc

astral haven
#

🤷 but they were also driving 2x the current

#

the fact that 3 60a powerstages was plenty for normal oc meant that 7 was very overkill even for ln2

#

oh wait no these were 40a

#

same story

#

this would have kerploded before you finished a 3dmark run on a 9590 but on a 4790k? chilly

vagrant pagoda
#

meanwhile in gpu land

astral haven
#

Jesus Christ
230w power target on the 7950x stock

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

Yea and these days that's not even that bad lel

vagrant pagoda
#

that was stock clocks no power limit

#

so like 950 core

#

i ran 1200 most of the time

astral haven
#

Yeet

vagrant pagoda
#

let me see if i can find a screenshot of that

#

that would of been gtav times

#

and i have zero screenshots

#

odd

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

100a you mean?

shadow minnow
#

Yeah lol

#

My mobo has more than 10 which is just an absolute overkill

#

I don’t think there is ever a way you would draw as much power as you would have to go utilize max efficiency wattage from all the power stages

cursive summit
#

A fresh RDNA 3 rumor has surfaced, this time regarding the mythical Radeon RX 7950 XT. This mega-GPU will reportedly feature a total of 9 chiplets: 2 GCDs (Graphics Compute Dies) and 7 MCDs (Memory Complex Dies). Two Navi 32 GCDs will be paired with 6-7 MCDs, each featuring a 64-bit memory controller and 32MB …

#

chiplets for gpu, thats intreseting at least

ashen spindle
#

but thats old news

#

amd mentioned it at analyst day months ago

#

and the ones here are just numbers that the original poster already said are for something else..

tropic nacelle
#

RDNA3 is going to be a massive improvement, chiplets finally being used in GPUs should be on the same level as zen chiplets in terms of improvements.

Should be good to see if they can leapfrog Nvidia.

Since AMD has a strong architecture already I think they will hit the ground running rather than zen being just "ok performance, great price" until zen 2

#

Wonder if it will finally be the return of excellent £250 "mid range" cards haha

ashen spindle
#

chiplet isn't cheaper in low end

#

so no

#

thats why amd isnt making cpus below 300$ on release, doesnt scale down, you need monolithic there again

ashen spindle

tropic nacelle
# ashen spindle chiplet isn't cheaper in low end

I mean chiplets are cheaper by the logic of significantly increasing yields.

It's the reason why big monolithic dies are expensive to make and not the way to go at this point.

The reason you don't see cheap release at launch is specifically because yields are that high, you rather sell higher end setups for more profit then the dies that fail the binning process get filtered down the stack so it takes time to build up these specifically.

Zen 1 had the dirt cheap 1600AF with their remainders for example.

It's certainly possible to provide cheaper graphics cards in the mid range with this implementation as you just use less.

This is assuming they have nailed the design as they haven't released anything about it but I would assume it will be longer wait for the mid range this time round unfortunately.

stark bobcat
#

1600af was zen+ wasnt it?

tropic nacelle
#

You are correct yep

ashen spindle
#

chiplets still dont scale lower, the 7600x is the lowest it can go, a monolithic chip could be a quadcore and thus be cheaper

#

and for gpus they are making one big gpu chip and the rest is memory chips, so still doesnt scale to lower end

#

and yes, 1600af for example was still monolithic

tropic nacelle
#

I mean once you take into account interconnect and at least with AMD the cost of the IO die then the rest is net gains.

They do sub £100 6 core CPUs, which is firmly mid range no?

I forgot it was a monothlithic die to be honest, I thought it was their lowest ccd setup.

My point was mostly that mid range stuff is cheaper as it scales hard through the stack, your point on the low end is correct though as you can only scale it down so far.

It should mean the mid to high end GPUs are much cheaper, due to competition I bet AMD will do the business thing and reap the profits of it but it would be nice if they pull another Hawaii undercut again though

misty saffron
#

huh, the prices are actually very reasonable

pale sigil
#

Beautiful

ashen spindle
#

well it depends on what we define as mid range I guess, but a lot of the lower end is just disabled 8 cores for example, not just defects, and that isn't really good scaling its more of a need to fill the market

pale sigil
#

Absolutely beautiful

ashen spindle
#

for gpus anything below a 3070 is either monolithic or the bottom tier of chiplet configs so it wont really change costs there

ashen spindle
# pale sigil

equally misses the point since that donation is leaving out parts but the whole situation is stupid anyway

#

idk why its still being talked about

tropic nacelle
#

The backpack is pretty funny how it's blown up. The fact he eventually added a written warranty not an implied one and it now has so many exclusions it's basically useless

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

its a normal warranty for a clothing piece and it would've been out before sales actually happen, they just didnt have it written during pre order phase were it really didnt matter anyway

tropic nacelle
ashen spindle
#

so idk why people got so butthurt

shadow minnow

Well it’s good content to get clicks on dogekek

Especially when he literally renegged on prior promises to "take care of everything" (in a manner that implied basically full coverage including minor user error and damage)

ashen spindle
#

sure but while its still on pre-order I dont really care about warranty since I can still cancel if it is a bad warranty before I get it

#

it was just communicated really bad

tropic nacelle
# ashen spindle so idk why people got so butthurt

It's because he didn't actually provide a warranty with it but said in twitter that they will support it all the time.

It's no legality to it so it was missold really. He was getting in a hissy fit without understanding that it's a simple thing to fix.

ashen spindle

and people like to outrage

ashen spindle

oh I thought that was after as well

shadow minnow
#

When it comes to Linus being able to afford it, I mean if something went really wrong I think he invested so much into labs it could cause temporary issues. Still not an excuse

reef patrol
#

My take - It's not important in terms of the legal side for consumers.

But it's kind of telling that a so called "reviewer" has such a bad understanding of warranty concerns as a consumer as soon as he's the one selling shit 😄

tropic nacelle
#

It's the whole "trust us" when it's a backpack that is incredibly expensive... You can't just imply a warranty as he was saying "warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on so I'm not writing it"

He acts like a child when running a business but I never got the whole Linus appeal

ashen spindle
#

ashen spindle

cursive summit
#

Cool, no shortages

#

Until there are shortages

ashen spindle
#

not exactly what was said, they had supply constraints because packaging factories could not keep up aka chips were made but not put onto substrate as fast

#

and that bottleneck is not a thing for now

#

and more chip supply since 5nm has less products

tropic nacelle
#

There will definitely be shortages but it will be much more like "normal"

They have finite capacity from TSMC and at the time were using this supply over two major console launched, their own zen launch and server chips.

It was extremely busy and now that console stock is improving and on a different node it means it's not taking up their capacity for the actual ryzen and RDNA3 chips.

ashen spindle
#

also less other customers to fight for wafers

tropic nacelle
#

Yep AMD bought more capacity for 5nm to help this , the joys of no longer having their own fab but was the right call overall

misty saffron
#

no titanium is kinda unfortunate…

#

well at least they keep the stainless steel on pro variants

#

i’m surprised no other manufacturer uses stainless steel

#

shit looks good for years

tropic nacelle

Because stainless steel is heavier than aluminium.

astral haven

It's fine to write slow code because it's pretty

tropic nacelle
#

I mean time is money, if it makes a reasonable improvement then it's worth the cost.

junior ore
#

None of these need to be at these hundreds of dollars

astral haven
#

?

#

You need to make back rnd somehow

tropic nacelle
#

You mean sell them for less than $200???

misty saffron
#

how is a clusterfuck of header files faster wtf

junior ore
#

I'd love to see how much was RnD and the cost of production.

astral haven
#

Cost of production is about 100 for 1 cc'd, 160 for 2ccd
Rnd was in the 10s of millions just for this, billions of you include dev that helps other products

junior ore
#

Right i know it'll be high. But i wonder what the actual amount is gonna be

misty saffron
#

if you’re trying to tell inlining most of the code is faster… idk what to tell you, we’re not in 1990

astral haven
#

All I'll say is nested libraries have problems and leave it at that

tropic nacelle
#

The actual manufacturing side is extremely cheap for dies, you are paying mostly for r&d.

It costs millions or billions for r&d, kinda like medicine where the end product is dirt cheap to make (mostly) but HOW to make it is the ridiculously hard and expensive part

astral haven
#

Yea except it's not like medicine where these products aren't life and death lol

ashen spindle
#

and like 20k a wafer at 5nm

tropic nacelle
#

The amount of trial and error for etching out layers and bonding tracks let alone the architecture design which is very expensive alone.

Also it's expensive to make and maintain a bleeding edge fab.

astral haven
tropic nacelle
ashen spindle
#

it was down a bit, then they raised the prices a bit so I assume still around 20k

astral haven
#

Alr

#

Thought it was still around 25, haven't seen updates yet but cheaper makes sense

astral haven
#

Think millions for just this launch, billions for the product as a whole

ashen spindle
#

btw it comes down to like 40$-ish for just the CCD chiplet in terms of pure wafer cost

#

so idk say 10-20 for IO die and then add substrate and packaging and smds and heatspreader and you're getting somewhere on raw costs alone already

tropic nacelle
#

Wonder if io is cheaper than that though as they had to use GF for that with their mandatory wafer agreement and it's on older process.

(No idea what that io die is this time as it's changed again)

junior ore
#

yeah. But I think they are trying way too hard to keep pushing out more new and new every year. let things settle and rest for 8 or so. make something good that lasts and worth the high price.

#

it's this cancer fo planned obsolescence

tropic nacelle
#

Wait did I miss something? Are you still talking about AMD latest release?

junior ore
#

Companies in general, mostly tech

ashen spindle
#

zen4 io die is N6 not GF12 this time

#

since it has 2 RDNA CUs

junior ore
#

Like. Always a new TV or phone or some device one year after the other, things like that*

#

When its such a waste

ashen spindle
#

cpus really arent planned obsolescence so idk what you went on about

tropic nacelle
#

They aren't really yearly releases they are gradually slipping it's like 18 months but it's not consistent because they aren't committed to a yearly launch to avoid a poor product launching.

It takes many years to develop these, plans are way ahead so this wouldn't really change.

AMD plans to support the platform through at least 2025 so it's not really planned obscenes just because they made a better chip later on.

You could make that argument for everything though in a capatalist society.

At least with CPUs and GPUs they actually are REALLY useful for calculations that can actually cure cancer and stuff heh

Oh nah not CPUs.

NSA key was how the us prevented export of devices containing high (over 40 bit) encryption

Like the ratchet driver is expensive as hell, but I've had a lot of ratchet driver seize up after a little bit of use. So it would make sense to me that Linus decided to go for quality above all else

The one where they showed off their engineering and design studio. They talked about the screwdriver then

fair gull
#

no they uploaded a special vid just for the driver

#

and how its designed and why it took 3 yrs

mild dome
#

Didn't know it took a whole 3 years heez

that screwdriver vid is very long.. too long for an ad :p

aka, cpu gets warm if you give it power

Hmm

ashen spindle

why did you link this again

cursive summit

I can see it, I think

#

"Ryzen 5 7600X Hitting Up To 90C at 120W"

#

See that's more interesting

#

60W on the 16 core is like, okay, defo it'll get hot

#

15W extra to hit 90? That's interesting

ashen spindle
#

no its not because we literally know nothing about how the setup is and what was run

#

yes they will run hotter than zen3 since its denser

#

thats about all we know

When I checked the LTT shop they were already on the 4th batch of screwdrivers. Well they call them "waves"

you wouldn’t wear something that feels terrible all the time

They talked about this on their live show. They actually have so many staff now that they can't give it to staff members, or they'd run out fast. 😄

So they're forced to figure out how to prioritise those on camera without turning into a class system.

Who doesn't do that lol

astral haven
astral haven
#

They didn't quite but almost doubled the power usage

#

135w to 230w is a crazy jump
Air coolers aren't gonna work well, and low end water is gonna be terrible
They also massively increased the ihs thickness which will further make the problem worse

ashen spindle
#

Well tdp isn't PPT and also not the exact power draw

vagrant pagoda
#

And Intel dose

#

Lol

ashen spindle
#

not by default

vagrant pagoda
#

Run a stock cooler on any high-end cpu

ashen spindle
#

unless you mean without cooling headroom like a stock cooler, but then its not really clocking to tjmax and more just stock clocks running into it already lol

astral haven
#

Yea the difference is Zen 4 will be doing this on 240 and 360 clcs lmao

vagrant pagoda
#

That's what boost is

astral haven
#

No

#

Boost only allows up to certain limits by default

astral haven
#

The temperature limits do exist, but Zen 1 and 2 and Intel generally have it tuned to power limit

ashen spindle
#

until alder lake you could give it all the headroom and intel wouldn't even go to constant PL1 even if temperatures would allow it

astral haven
# reef patrol Disagree.

That's fine, but I'm talking about the definitions, you can disagree with the definitions all you want but they aren't changinf

#

The last CPU I remember that would boost up to thermal throttle on literally every air cooler and even good water coolers was the 9590
And I don't think amd wants to bring that back lel

ashen spindle
#

yeah not with people constantly thinking 80C is killing a cpu because surely thats too hot

stark bobcat
#

lmao any non tech person always thinks that

#

"oh no my gpu is 60C"
-American

astral haven
#

No, a non tech person will say "what does that mean, the number isn't red so that's fine right?"

stark bobcat
#

well I have talked to non tech people and they were scared of 80C

ashen spindle
#

the real danger lies in people with just some knowledge to understand what some parts mean and think they know what all of it means form that

astral haven
stark bobcat
#

hmm I guess maybe

ashen spindle
#

nah I'd wager also non tech people who just, idk, cooked water before think 80C is hot

astral haven
#

Yes but how would non tech people even see the temperature

#

Alt of folks I told at my last job I said the computer is running a little warm out their hand on the palmrest of the laptop and said no it seems fine

ashen spindle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

stark bobcat
#

I mean before I became a tech person I had my gpu manufacturers software installed which gave me a temp readout not that I knew what to do with that info

astral haven
#

And they would say that while the software to report temps is sitting right in front of them saying 90c in big red numbers

stark bobcat
#

it s fine

My temp is now 56 and its hooooot af

ashen spindle

final flame
#

80c is a bit on the hot side for a gpu,
cpu would be somewhat fine at that temp

astral haven
#

It's not hot for either

fickle ore
stark bobcat
#

agree

#

80C is

#

k

astral haven
#

80c is a very meh temperature
It's not cool
It's not hot
It's just meh

final flame
#

it also depends on the gpu, some can run hotter than others

astral haven
#

Remember transistors melt at 150c

#

At least for normal CPU silicon

#

Gan based 230c CPUs when

fickle ore
stark bobcat

silicon doesn't need to bathe

astral haven
fickle ore
#

good point

#

I concede

tropic nacelle
#

80c is actually nominal temps for most GPUs (pc anyway).

3080 memory is rated for 105c normal temp operations and the actual GPU die is safer than that.

80c is "cool" relative to maximum operating temps.
