Just heard someone complain about the thermal system on the Steam Deck about how it would be far better if Valve put the intake vent on the bottom edge of the Deck beside the SD card slot

lay it flat to dock it?

xd

he has a dock for it

so he must use it sometimes at least

ashen spindle

well if its docked the rotation doesnt matter, so flat, or rotated would work

#

airflow might be better, sounds like it could be the case idk the internals

wheat plume
#

youd block a vent on the underside a lot than on the back from normal use

#

when I use the Switch in bed, the bottom is against my bed , so any intake vents there would be covered

like having the phone set to english to prevent terrible translations, but have google maps be in your local language, which helps with the text to speech

crimson wigeon
#

When are they gonna split locale and language so I can have English but with my local date time formats and other things sigh..

reef patrol
#

You've always been able to do that?

At least on Windows this has been a thing since ... before XP?

crimson wigeon

Yes, but I mean like on me phone and stuff

crimson wigeon

Yeah, pretty much everything chromium based ignores those

Hence why you have to set Discord to "English, UK" if you want 24 hour timestamps, for example

# fair gull u wont need protobufs most likely

Well, I generated protobufs (from Steam's proto files) because even the example documentation on Steam had some, but it didn't show to get said protobuf into the URL, only just the protobuf itself. There's examples of how to PUT protobufs, but not GET. Any other suggestions? I don't want to bother you anymore, but if there's nothing else I can do, I will resort to web scraping and that will be that.
Also really wish there was a way to ping people without annoying them too much.

fair gull
#

u cant do get with protobufs

#

i did promise to look into it

slow garnet
#

It's JSON protobuf.

fair gull
#

i ate smth so now i can do work

#

protobuf is protobuf

slow garnet
#

Well yes, but apparently the Steam api consumes it and returns it as JSON. Hold on.

fair gull
#

in put and post sure

slow garnet
#

ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

#

If you can't figure it out forget about it, I really don't want to give you any trouble.

#

I can probably find a GET request that doesn't need an API key if you want, as that one is partners only anyway.

fair gull
#

why are u even trying to use that param

slow garnet
#

It was an example. The one I'm trying to use is date_range_created on QueryFiles of IPublishedFileService, so that when I'm going through the pages, a page will keep the same content regardless of the time.

#

(As in, new content will not push the IDs of other stuff onto another page).

#

The API for it doesn't offer a "oldest to newest", only a "newest to oldest".

#

As such, I don't really have a choice but to limit the dates to prevent new content from pushing content on other pages downwards (due to new items).

fair gull
#

and ure sure thats a valid param?

slow garnet
#

Should be. https://steamapi.xpaw.me/#IPublishedFileService/QueryFiles shows it as a valid parameter, but it's a message. And as far as I can tell, the other parameters on said QueryFiles do indeed function.

#

And to note: this just takes the Steam's API's "GetSupportedAPIList".

#

So it's straight from Steam itself, and more up to date than the official Steam API documentation.

#

I also tried sending the request via POST, but steam rejects it and tells me to use GET.

#

For example, this should have been valid, as this uses the .proto files that Steam provides, and was generated with MessageToJsonString:

{
 "date_range_created": {
  "timestamp_start": 1325376000,
  "timestamp_end": 1388534400
 }
}

But sure enough, it isn't. Even with or without whitespace, with or without curly brackets being converted to %whatever, with or without newlines, etc.

#

It checkouts in a JSON to Protobuf converter, and Steam's own "session" message also checks out. So that's why I kinda started asking what the hell I'm supposed to do in this regard.

fair gull
#

ngl no clue

#

i tried just attaching a raw protobuf at the end

#

also no dice

slow garnet
#

Well, thanks for trying at least.

#

I'll resort to web scraping.

fair gull
#

shouldnt steam also use those

#

or do they not offer a before and after date

slow garnet
#

They offer it for their URLs, yes.

#

Hold on.

fair gull
#

id assume sanely split into 2 params

slow garnet
#

Yup.
&created_date_range_filter_start=1325376000&created_date_range_filter_end=1388534400

fair gull
#

ofc devs cant have that

slow garnet
#

Though, I might still be able to reduce the amount of queries I send if I use both web scraping and the Steam API.

#

But what a stupid fucking solution, jesus.

#

Anyway, thanks again for verifying my worry: Steam's API sucks ass lul

slow garnet
#

lul more Steam API and URL bullshit: you can have more than 30 items on a workshop search if you modify your cookie. The normal limit is 30, but you can set the cookie to 100.

I was thinking about the LG 27GN950-B but I don't know if there is something better

mossy prawn
#

what's wrong with that?

thick elk
#

Scaling exists you know, and on windows it works pretty well unlike linux

reef patrol
#

It doesn't in games.

#

I've had 30" 4K monitors and I would never, ever play most games on one cause of poor scaling options (if any)

#

Hell my 34" is 1440P (which sometimes is just on the hairline edge of being too small)

thick elk
#

I have never had such issues on 24inch 1440p back when I still used it

#

the only thing that can give me trouble is reading text on dark themes

ashen spindle
#

I would say it highly depends on your content, if you play something like Anno or factorio with lots of ui you're more likely to have issues in that regard than if your games are valorant or the likes

reef patrol
#

Mhmm. More text and UI? More potential for issues and poor scaling options.

mossy prawn
#

I only play competitive games that's why I don't want a monitor that's > 27"

thick elk
#

Maybe, still I never have issues on 27inch 1440p, and most games do have a ui scaling option.

reef patrol
thick elk
#

I mostly play games that have small text

#

Basically the argument is you wnat a good overview of everything on screen, larger screens require more eye movement

mossy prawn
thick elk
#

at full screen

ashen spindle
#

if you mostly play competitive games maybe look at 1440p 360hz monitors instead? would be something more in line I think

reef patrol
thick elk
#

in his case framerate is less important in lol

#

peripheral vision exists but is not detailed enough

wheat plume
#

I assume this wont turn off the SSDs too?

reef patrol
#

It will.

ashen spindle
#

I think carmonbens monitor is a 4k 240hz but I dont remember the model thats why I pinged him earlier, that would probably a good fit

thick elk
#

Personally for regular non competitive gaming 27inch seems like a sweetspot at roughly arm length.

#

and my arms are long

#

so I sit at roughly 70cm away

reef patrol
#

I sit up close to mine.

#

About a full keyboard length worth (too lazy to get up and find a ruler šŸ˜„ )

thick elk
#

Another thing is I like to use my setup for productivity as well and for that having 4 screens is most covenient. Going larger than 27inch would take up too much space, and no I do not want to stack vertically.

reef patrol
#

bezels, bezels everywhere

thick elk
#

Right now I use 3x 27inch 1440p and one 24inch 1200x1920

#

I don't mind them at all

#

sure if you could get a single double bent 7680*1440 screen split in software it would be better but I really don't mind not having it.

#

I also don't need to have 3 of the same monitors,

Enough to subconsciously decide whether or not to pay attention to it šŸ˜„

deft marlin
#

Since you’d have the entire screen in view

reef patrol
#

closer*

#

Not farther.

deft marlin
#

It’s really measurement dependent

thick elk
#

if you sit far some curve still works but it needs to be shallower

deft marlin
#

If it’s to the point where text becomes illegible then it’s countering the advantage

deft marlin
reef patrol
#

My Lenovo is 1500R and I would basically need to touch my nose to it to get a view that's purely monitor xD

deft marlin
#

1500R could work at a farther range

#

1800R dogekek

thick elk
#

it also depends on the size of the screeen of course

deft marlin
#

Yea

#

I did say that, a larger flat screen at least would be to some advantage as sitting further away enough allows a view of more things

#

in focus at once

#

but too far and you can’t see shit then it’s useless

#

would work with a 27ā€, can’t speak for 43ā€

#

or 49ā€

reef patrol
#

Life's too short for small monitors. I want immersion, not an iPad šŸ˜„

thick elk
#

I personally never used a curved screen, but I don't think it will suite me well.

reef patrol
thick elk
#

how does it work when looking at off angles

#

like centering your eyes at the right side of the monitor, things like that

#

I tend to do that at times

reef patrol
#

I can draw a straight line in Photoshop and it will appear straight no matter where I focus my eyes. They adapt.

thick elk
#

Thinking about it I could at some point in the future go with a 34inch mildely curved monitor for my center screen sometime in the future.

#

but for now I have little reason to change things up

reef patrol
#

It's like the Parthenon. It looks straight on photos, but it's actually curved by design to trick perspective curving.

thick elk
#

to be honest I have tried it for a bit at some demo's and such, and never minded it.
I can in general be pretty conservative about these things

#

Either way multi monitor will be a thing I use as it works rather efficently for me and gaming immersion is only secondary to that.

reef patrol
#

I love the IDEA of multi monitor. But there are just major hurdles that need to be addressed before I can jump in on those instead of buying wide ass monitors to achieve a similar screen space.

  1. Bezels (like at at all. We need panels that can click together and function like those flip phones)
  2. Apps that don't deal well with multi monitor (cursor escapes) or going exclusive fullscreen and blanking all other monitors.
thick elk
#

bezels sure, personally don't mind them as every screen is it's separate thing.
Full screen troubles, not really that big a deal most of the time, and I have used it for years on windows. On linux there are some other hurdles but full screen programs is not one of them.

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#
  • the occasional issue when your monitors are not the same hz that it can drop frames on the higher fps games...
thick elk
#

Never had too much issues myself, and I have been using multi monitor setups since the early 2010's

#

sure the cursor escaped from time to time but in those games you just alt tabed back in to fix it

ashen spindle
#

On Nvidia cards it’s a known issue with using hardware accelerated things on the lower hz screens

#

I have it too sometimes but it doesn’t appear to be directly related to it so I’m not sure

thick elk
#

I mostly run linux now where the issues are bit different.

#

on xorg you can only have adaptive sync when using a single monitor for example and the desktop renders at the lowest refresh rate internally.

#

On wayland it's generally fixed but I am using nvidia

#

I think that issue is present on all Nvidia drivers but it’s not something happening to everyone

wheat plume
#

I love that a few days ago I was talking about this to someone and everyone said that this was not a thing that happens

#

Funny right?

#

But it is
It's been said here before

ashen spindle
#

It depends on the context

#

Doesn’t happen to everyone etc.

junior ore
#

Since on linux you dont have to use the drivers made from Nvidia

ashen spindle
#

it is present on all nvidia drivers since the exact cause isn't really known last I checked

#

so that includes open source drivers

junior ore
#

It being an unknown issue doesn't mean it would crop up on drivers not made by nvidia.
But i wont say definitively it isnt an issue on those said drivers for I don't know if it is or isn't. But its easy to imagine they have their own separate issues.

ashen spindle
#

its a decade or longer old issue, I'm fairly certain if some open source driver had a fix for it they would add it to their own drivers by now

junior ore
#

Well not exactly.

#

That would assume the open source shares the same code

#

Which they legally cant to certain extents

#

Made by and worked.om by different teams of people: its gonna be different. Unless the issue is the firmware itself

#

But it being a decade long issue

#

Sounds like a software issue ported over from older versions and yet fixed. Maybe. They are preserving something old and carrying the old bug.

pale sigil
junior ore
#

*also it needs to be demonstrated its an issue on these third party drivers.

Thing is I end up playing it in a lot

Like, or would cost me more to buy a hdmi 2 cable etc than just buy this dock

It's very good value

thick elk

Yea my use is very different so for me it would be relatively poor value

still useless, still affected by bugs, hiccups, packet loss and whatnot

Tesla markets their solution as autonomous self driving in big banner ads, and only specify that it's only 50% self driving in the fine text.

Fun fact google skipped this lower tier of self driving in favour of trying to immediately get to the most advanced version because they knew a half/half version like Tesla's would tank confidence in the technology.

#

That sounds great

shadow minnow
#

Still idk if I would call it an soc without ram

#

But with amd it makes sense

#

Considering they tend to make console APUs

#

Just gotta bring that to consumer market

cursive summit
#

We should get more AMD CPU leaks any day now

#

Typically the presentation gets leaked like 1-3 days before the event

stark bobcat
#

Consoles are not consumer products?

shadow minnow
#

I mean the apus themselves

stark bobcat
#

Apus also exist for Diy and they will release rdna ones with the new generation I'm sure

shadow minnow
#

Well yeah but amd apus for dyi rn have a lot weaker GPU than console ones

stark bobcat
#

I just adressed that

#

Also apus for previous generations were often bottlenecked by ram so I don't know how much of an improvement rdna would have been considering how much it would have cost to develop

tropic nacelle
#

Problem is there is a much smaller market for high end GPUs in APU.

Consoles obviously but for "end users" it means more expensive cooling and system memory that's fast.

RDNA2 with its massive cache would help with the memory bandwidth and AMD could easily do an APU with HBM ondie which was one of their end goals with that technology

shadow minnow
#

Would be interesting to have apus with some integrated vram

tropic nacelle
#

With rdna3 being chiplet design it's way more likely that we see some fully fledged APUs rather than just limited to custom designs like consoles

misty saffron
#

okay, so it’s actually a good thing now

#

considering it was impossible to get macbook displays

junior ore
#

Whats typically put in consoles are custom versions of the APUs.
But yeah general consumer based APUs that are on the higher performance end would be cool but mayhaps too tricky to do in a small package to compete with large graphic cards.

tropic nacelle
#

A big chunk of it is the expensive memory that needs to be packaged with it, for consoles it makes sense as they can combine it all so buying everything as a complete thing is better software wise and cost aspects.

ms and Sony have massive orders that it's fine for custom designs, they want it in a small form factor as well which is why APU designs are much more appealing.

I'm just thankful next gen ryzen will all have a basic GPU included as the IO die now has integrated graphics. Not for games but handy when debugging a GPU being broken or if you just want it for desktop work!

junior ore
#

Yeah I get wanting a backup display always on standby.

reef patrol
junior ore
#

Intentionally over priced

mild dome
#

One of the big advantages console APUs have, is that there is only (traditionally) only one version of an APU, running a very lightweight operating system. Makes it easier when optimizing an engine if you don't have to worry about a half dozen generations of silicon between 4 vendors, in which accelerators are dropped, added, and modified between generations, a minimum RAM capacity, minimum disk capacity (but what dev this day even cares laughs in 100GB download), and that to a more minor extent that the game could be installed on a HDD, SATA SSD, or NVME SSD.

A consumer APU suffers from similar problems a PC would have in that there would invariably be 2 manufacturers (Intel, and AMD), with half a dozen different generations and so on

junior ore
#

Aye. Consoles typically have more access to the metal of the hardware where as thats typically a no no within PC for security reasons.

well. except for the window OS. that shit hogs resources.

#

or will cause an infinite search loop and make your drive scream and die

#

sometimes*

astral haven
#

Thats usually a hard drive specific bug
And it doesn't use much
It uses the same amount of resources as Xbox os does lmao

frozen ingot
#

windows ain't hogging much of my available resources, and this hardware is old

junior ore
#

"Windows Search Facility"

#

that was it

#

had to enter net.exe stop "Windows search"

#

happened a total of 5 times, so annoying DX<

astral haven
#

Probably was the search indexer
Which is disableable but really speeds up searching and the start menu

slow garnet
#

Any version of Windows past 7 has major issues with hard drives, at least from my personal experience. Always stuck at 100%.

astral haven
#

8 works fine on hdd

#

10 can work on very very fast high end hdds

junior ore
#

I don't think my laptop had a disk drive in it. was pretty sure I only put solid states in it.

#

I could be misremembering though.

astral haven
#

Dramless SSD = HDD basically

junior ore
#

thats a possibility I didn't consider.

#

anyways you can't "let it run its course" though

#

it's an infinite search loop

#

it doesn't stop until you force it to.

astral haven
#

No it'll finish eventually

#

Search indexer
Look it up

slow garnet
#

It's not only that

#

Windows Defender is also part of the problem

#

It'll start scanning when it wants, and it's a pain in the ass to stop.

#

On shitty prebuilt desktop computers you find in businesses and etc, it will drive the system to a complete stop.

junior ore
#

lol oh def yeah. i've had my fair share of that waiting for clients computer to finish with those and explaining to them.

slow garnet
#

Another thing that is notoriously bad is the updates, both downloading and applying them.

#

Even worse when it gets stuck in a loop of updating and then un-updating(?).

#

Yeah. Linux (on non source distributions), it's still iterative, but way fucking quicker. On source distributions, it's way longer and way more complex.

wheat plume
#

I like how Fedora updates
anything related to system functions, it installs them on a reboot so there is no risk of the thing being used when its updated

junior ore
#

I get notifications for updates and its all just choice. But I am pretty 100% sure there is an option and way to auto-update

#

oh you meant on windows thing

slow garnet
#

It's a complicated but also stupid problem.

wheat plume
#

I have only been told there is an update after its already downloaded and installed it and its at the "Pending Restart" stage

#

ye

slow garnet
#

On one hand, Windows (and most sysadmins and etc) wants the updates installed to avoid exploits going rampant or etc. On the other hand, doing so fucks everyone over, people who need uptime since they're rendering a video or they're typing a document and etc.

#

IMO choice should be given, but apparently Windows thinks otherwise, even with all the registry hacks and other bullshit.

astral haven
#

Microsoft gives the option to sysadmins

#

And this

slow garnet
#

Not to mention the fact that it's impossible to create a Win10 install without an account unless you don't have an internet connection. Wouldn't surprise me if eventually those forced updates strip out features or even make the system paid to use, and as such, is why the forced updates exist.

crimson wigeon
#

Ah once again hearing the problems I don't have because I have the pro version, lovely

astral haven
slow garnet
#
  • Every single large update settings are reset.
astral haven
slow garnet
#

ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

#

Happened to me multiple times

#

Done dealing with it

wheat plume
crimson wigeon
#

I dunno, when I "upgraded" to 11 it didn't reset any settings that I can remember thonk

astral haven
#

My main install started on 7 and I upgraded all the way to 11 including win 8 (original)
My power settings have persisted the entire time, as have background and lock settings

#

I added in update disabling in early won 10 and it's been kept ever since

junior ore
astral haven
#

You don't need to do that

slow garnet
#

Right, as I mentioned, unless you don't have an internet connection.

astral haven
#

Shift f10 and run net stop and I forget the cpmmand

#

Macos takes 3 hours to update

slow garnet
#

Well yeah that's another option, but let's be honest, why the fuck should we even need to do that in the first fucking place?

junior ore
slow garnet
#

Also, as for the settings being kept: Search windows 10 settings are reset after update "privacy"

#

Guarantee you that my settings were not kept.

ashen spindle
astral haven
#

I set up 5-10 PCs at a time remotely, and it's much quicker to just run the command

plush summit
#

this is why im not using windows anymore

slow garnet
#

Right, near impossible for the average user.

ashen spindle
#

as for settings, on my 2 and 5 year old windows machines nothing was ever reset and they update whenever, nothing reset

slow garnet
#

Don't know what to say then. Maybe it's regional or just multiple fucked installs. Doesn't help that I also got bit by the bug that deleted all my files. ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

#

As such, Windows >7 can fuck right off.

astral haven
#

You don't need to change your mind, but be aware there are facts that you have that are incorrect

#

Speed of updates is all you brought up

#

And I addressed that

#

It took me steam deck 25 minutes to update too lel

junior ore
slow garnet
#

I don't know the specifics about the Steam Deck, but it taking 25 minutes to update sounds like an issue with the distribution itself or the drive.

astral haven
#

Ya
So it's basically easy enough that a random user can do it
But here's the secret
It's actually better that people use Ms accounts
Because without Ms accounts the data on the drive can't be encrypted for the average end user

astral haven
#

The other thing is that Ms accounts will eventually be required for all devices in an enforced manner so that stolen devices can't be used with windows again for example
Our enterprise already has that partially set up

junior ore
crimson wigeon
#

Yeah it doesn't really take that long, maybe the first one took a while though

astral haven
#

Eh it's fine since I intended to update

#

I also don't have the fastest internet

crimson wigeon
#

But also you can just keep using it while updating and then do the old re-boot when done

astral haven
#

Same could be said for windows...

crimson wigeon
#

Indeedlydoo

astral haven
#

Heck half of my windows updates don't even need a reboot

#

And holy crap macos
What a disaster
Our M1 Mac mini lost it's password in an update
And that was when I learned you could reset the password to a non apple id connected Mac with only keyboard access -_-

#

Even windows requires a hacking tool of some kind
So if you disable booting to external devices you can't just walk up and reset it
But for macos it's built into recovery
Wtaf

astral haven
#

Did they remove it in 13?

reef patrol
#

They removed it ages ago by removing it from the machines. Now you either boot into a recovery partition on a functional hdd/ssd or gotta boot from a disc.

#

Good old days when you could just boot into recovery from a blank hdd and download everything from the web are long over.

astral haven
#

No you misunderstand

#

Files on the computer stayed

#

Apps stayed
The account stayed

#

But we are able to reset the password still

reef patrol
#

We're clearly talking about two different things here - I'm pointing out that the recovery system is gone from the motherboard.

astral haven
#

Ya

#

I'm talking about working macos install where you forgot the password (or it reset itself on it's own)

reef patrol
#

Imagine needing encryption outside of a corporate environment.

astral haven
#

???

#

This isn't an encryption problem

#

I understand not encrypting by default

reef patrol
#

An OS I cannot access through a 2nd PC through a basic ass command prompt without a password is not an OS I want to have in my home šŸ˜„

astral haven
#

What I don't understand is someone being able to walk up to my computer, restart it, and reset my password and walk away with it

#

Unless ofc you give all your data to the big fruit

reef patrol
#

Step 1 : Don't have your shit stolen.
Step 2 : Don't buy shit that lets you hardware lock it.

astral haven
#

?

#

On windows you at least can disable USB boot without a password to prevent hacking tools
On macos the hacking tool is built in??????
