if difficult involves paying some scalping jerk fivefold.. yeah i’ll pass

#

at least that’s what i’ve found checking for zeroes some time ago

reef patrol
#

Yep. You basically solder the PCB and the Pi together and program it with a simple script that converts signals and then have a USB cable go out from that out of the board.

junior ore
#

nice nice

#

Though I think there's already methods where you don't need a whole pi. I believe you can just find simple small boards.

reef patrol
#

Yeah there are tiny arduino boards.

junior ore
#

like one of these. converts XT/AT/PS2/Terminal to USB

reef patrol
#

Yep. Those 😄

misty saffron
#

arduino boards usually aren’t fast enough

reef patrol
#

I just like the idea of being able to run a Mac from INSIDE of the keyboard.

misty saffron
#

oh yeah, ps/2 doesn’t really require speed

reef patrol
#

The Macintosh Plus I have has a blisteringly fast 8Mhz Motorolla 68000 CPU. Very easy to fully emulate on any pi 😄

misty saffron
#

i tried making an xbox to ps1 controller conversion thing with an arduino board, thing was too slow

junior ore
misty saffron
#

too slow FOR THE PS1 PART

junior ore
#

wait like. connecting an xbox to ps1 or vice versa?

misty saffron
#

an xbox controller to ps1

#

it quickly fell apart when i wasn’t able to communicate with the ps1

reef patrol
#

But before I get that far I gotta finish off my Faux Macintosh Plus project. Basically gutted one completely and replaced the old CRT monitor with an iPad LCD and a potential Raspberry Pi inside (It can fit a compact mITX PC if I wanted to)

misty saffron
#

still need to get a crt tv at my new place… have a psio-modded ps1 yet i literally don’t have a tv

junior ore
#

which macintosh? the original all in one rectangle?

i've had the luxary to repair two fo these bad bois

#

I have a Nvidia TNT 2 on my shelf

junior ore
#

nice!

reef patrol
#

I still need to buy a 3D Printer, so I can mount everything internally. But it's all working (I need to get a better driver to shrink the LCD output to fit the bezels)

junior ore
#

I have a bunch of old hardware but I recently moved so I'd have to find them again .

misty saffron
#

thanks for reminding me to take the slim ps2 from parents’ house though

junior ore
#

very nice mansen

misty saffron
#

at least that has cheap hdmi converters

junior ore
reef patrol
#

I love reusing old tech. Literally grabbed this LCD from a dead iPad for free at work and bought a 15$ conversion board on Aliexpress that turns it into HDMI 😄

junior ore

final flame
#

I am on the south side of Texas

junior ore
#

sounds difficult to get a good CRT there

misty saffron
#

not really, just the hassle of getting it back home

#

i don’t have or plan on buying a car

reef patrol
#

Just borrow a tank.

misty saffron
#

so far i’ve been surprised by the fact you can get seemingly anything in moscow

#

also sell anything locally in a day

junior ore
#

but yeah I plan to eventually get my retro PC up and running again

#

and get it to dual-boot DOS and 98se

#

but it had too much issues with DOS

#

and I gotta beef up and get up and running the PowerPC macintosh that i have

misty saffron
#

also have a useless ipad mini

reef patrol
#

For the LCD converter? They are specific to each iPad revision.

misty saffron
#

ah

reef patrol
#

You'd be best off searching based on the Axxx model number of the iPad.

misty saffron
#

oh so you need to do fuck all as well to get it working

#

that’s nice

reef patrol
#

Yup. Literally plug and play with the ribbon cable that goes from the LCD.

#

My challenge is making a mount for everything. The LCD to the case, the two controller boards to the back of the LCD and so on.

#

Gotta get a 3D printer next time there's a big sale and work on some brackets.

junior ore
#

I gotta retrofit an old ipod I got. bad disk drive.

misty saffron
#

i’m sure you can get somebody to design you the mounting brackets

#

surely there are cad files for the macintosh cases

misty saffron
reef patrol
#

I'm sure I can find something - But there's just so much waiting and reprinting and shipping involved. I'd rather just be able to do prints at home and then ask for help with adjusting the file slightly based on a visual comparison 😄

junior ore
#

lol probably the smaller one. It's not an original IPOD. I believe it's an IPOD "Classic" , bulky throwback to original but at-time modernized.

misty saffron
#

nah, the bigger one

junior ore
#

but I'll be putting in new guts and everything

#

it uses the bigger one?

misty saffron
#

yes

junior ore
#

i hadn't opened it up yet.

misty saffron
#

yeah finding new case will be a nightmare

#

99.9% are shit

junior ore
#

case is in good condition so it's fine. though if I did, I'd find some.. idunno, fancy metal based one.

#

like the gameboy metal ones

misty saffron
#

i can recommend getting an ipod mini instead if you’re modding it just for the sake of modding it

misty saffron
junior ore
#

nah its what I got.

#

don't got a mini and don't plan on a mini

misty saffron
#

which uses compact flash hdds

#

i’m sure you know where i’m going with this

junior ore
#

I've looked this up before but have forgotten for a year >.>

#

but compact flash drives : been meaning to look into that for my DOS project before.

misty saffron
#

compact flash is just ide interface shrunk

#

it’s pretty neat

junior ore
#

yee

#

from IDE to PATA to Compact. lots of pins and IIRC most fo them easy to match up

misty saffron
#

almost completely sure it’s the exact same pinout

#

just small

junior ore
#

I think there is some pins differences? i'd have to check

misty saffron
#

well at least based on the fact the adaptors are dumb

valid light
#

hi

junior ore

#

@misty saffron IDE for normal 3.5 inch drives are at 40 pins but laptop IDEs are at 44 pins. which I assume the extras are power based ones.

misty saffron

likely just a molex+ide child

junior ore
#

probably

#

compact flash has 50 pins

misty saffron

wtf are the extra ones for

gonna have to google that one

yeh, I like variable

I haven't noticed my 60hz display being choppy or not smooth tbh

I honestly wish I could crap on OP for making such a gimmick sounding feature. But aside from the flicker when looking at night at the time? I genuinely can't feel or see any issues.

wheat plume
#

I do like variable refresh , especially when the phone has a display that can handle it like LTPO or whatever it's called

reef patrol
#

Same if the FPS is static. But with variable you could fool me into saying anything is 90hz

#

Clearly it's managing to get ahead of my finger and slow movements 😄

frozen ingot
#

right, its "nicer" but ultimately kind of pointless for using a phone

#

I'd rather pay less and have better battery life kthx

reef patrol
#

Nice can be a feature.-

#

I can use a button push phone and still get calls and text. But I don't WANT to 😛

frozen ingot
#

its not that I don't appreciate higher refresh rate, using 60hz on a computer is painful particularly for gaming

wheat plume
#

Yeah....I love my 165Hz xd

frozen ingot

but probably 95% of my time on phone is spent looking at static images or video with framerates far below 60fps anyways

Tech Spurt - 2022

cursive summit
#

Apple's already forced to adopt USB-C

#

And they are going to

#

Idk why would the headline be "could force", if the regulation already sparked change

junior ore
#

bad journalism*

ashen spindle
#

because EU rules dont really apply in india

cursive summit
#

I doubt that Apple will design phones differently between regions

ashen spindle
#

also the eu legislation still needs to be approved

junior ore
#

Dr.Quinn speaks the truth on this me thinks. it is possible and within Apple's power to make regional phone differences.

#

But, logistically, it would be a bad move. but within possibility.

ashen spindle
#

I dont think they would but theres just nothing wrong with the headline

junior ore
#

this is true too. and it's a consideration. which I believe should be pushed and followed too.

#

E-waste is such an issue and apple far from helps solve its and has made it worse despite their claims of not doing so.

#

they've been constantly fighting against the reduction of it from the start ever since everyone's finally moved off from proprietary phone chargers way back when USB mini came out.

cursive summit
#
#

There were tons of articles weeks back about how Apple is making the switch

#

India won't change the fact that they already are going to do so anyways

ashen spindle
#

and?

cursive summit
#

It's funny cause

#

The same website posted about it 3 weeks ago

#

That they are already switching

#

So, "Will force them to switch"

#

I dislike stupid journalism so just ranting a bit

ashen spindle
#

so what if the switch only comes because they are forced to and if it wouldn't be discussed they wouldnt make the change

#

this isn't contradicting each other

#

sure maybe throw in a slightly different description to show indias regulation is not the first that could force it or something so its a better title

#

but its not bad journalism

junior ore
#

Sounds like a mix or perhaps two different people, I didn't go so far as to see who wrote it and all that.
usually these things would have multiple different people writing these things.

Imagine Intel sells x86 license to Nvidia for like 100B

Primes

Ah that was it! Prime95

astral haven

Prime95 is a slower algorithm that is better for bigger primes

junior ore

Ah okay

#

I assume lower time is better?

astral haven
#

For the first benchmark with the m1 and Skylake mobile CPU lower is better
For Dave plumbers version, higher is better

#

The fastest arm seive I can find is 20m/second

#

For the davepl seive

ashen spindle
#

and just as a reminder amd and intel are also very well capable of making arm chips, they say like every year when they get asked if they would consider it

astral haven
#

Yep

#

Arm vs x86 doesn't matter

#

AMD and Intel use x86 because they are used to it

ashen spindle
#

if the licensing wasnt a thing I'm willing to bet m1 might've been x86 depending on what workers they could have gotten

#

not saying it would've definitely been, but theres a good chance

astral haven
#

They (amd and Intel) could probably make an arm CPU in about a year that performs identically to their x86 cpus but it would likely use more power
It's really just a question of microcode
The CPUs are interpreted and ooe either way

junior ore
#

Is ARM worth it if it causes extra power consumption?

astral haven
#

If they were to design the CPUs from scratch it would be the same power for the same performance

#

If they reused an x86 design for arm it would be less efficient

ashen spindle
#

instruction set basically does not matter for general purpose cpus, experience, node etc. matters way more

junior ore
#

Would be some need or future proofing to go with ARM over x86, or potential big development with the architecture?

astral haven
#

Either way the speedups in modern processors is accelerators not general compute

junior ore
#

Trying to think why they would need to go with ARM besides I guess slice fo the mobile market.

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

arm exists because x86 is licensed

junior ore
#

oooohhh, now that is a big difference.

It’s kinda P2W

Paid items increase your chance of getting it

fair gull

the thunderbolt is free ¯_(ツ)_/¯

junior ore
#

nah. them city poles and buildings steal all the thunderbolts

shadow minnow
fair gull
junior ore
#

yes and the plane would have made a sorta-half decent semi-conductor idea but those planes weren't made out fo much metal and I don't think lead was very conductive.

astral haven
#

What

junior ore
#

( crappy bi-plane and being shot down)

astral haven
#

All planes are made of highly conductive materials

junior ore
#

not really.

astral haven
#

Old ones are metal tubes

junior ore
#

even in WW2 there was a couple wooden ones.

astral haven
#

With metal frames

junior ore
#

yeah they would have some frames and structures.

#

I was meaning overall*

astral haven
#

"some"

junior ore
#

I said weren't made of much metal* as in not a lot.

#

though depends on the plane.

astral haven
#

By that definition my house is made of plaster because there's plaster on top of all the structural elements... blobfacepalm

shadow minnow
junior ore
#

okay I checked. it was very common for bi-planes to be made out of fabric-like materials.

junior ore
#

like some kind of cotton+ cellulose nitrate dope or such

astral haven
#

The biplanes have fabric covering metal

junior ore
#

not metal plates or bodies. it'd be thin frames. The majority would sitll be the fabric.

astral haven
#

Smh

#

You really refuse to think for even a second...

junior ore
#

look I get what youa re saying.

#

there's metal in it.

#

it's the skeleton and structure tht keeps it together.

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

Most of some earlier planes was made from wood

astral haven
#

Holy shit

shadow minnow
#

You don’t say houses are made from Steel rods

junior ore
#

except a paint has in no part what so ever in its functionality. Unless it was conditioning/thermal based stuff. Both the fabric and the frame are required for the plane functionality.

shadow minnow
#

You say they are made from bricks

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

Just because part of fuselage has metal doesn’t make the entire plane metal

shadow minnow
#

Some are

junior ore
#

if the house was made fo bricks yes. In this analog :
The Support structure walls on the inside are the metal frames and the outside bricks is the fabric.

astral haven
junior ore
#

and thats why i left in a conditional for types of paint that did serve a purpose as oppose to the decorative types.

astral haven
astral haven
junior ore
#

I didn't say bricked structural walls.

astral haven
#

You can use cinder block but not true bricks

junior ore
#

I said structural walls. not wht material.

#

if you want : structural supports.

shadow minnow
#

What was even the original point of discussion? I recall it was like sth with thunder?

astral haven
#

The argument was arm v x86

#

🤣

junior ore
#

it turned into whether a bi-plane could be conductive enough for a lightning bolt to kill king kong lol

shadow minnow
#

Anyways most sources say that ww1 planes were “made from” wood.
Even if engine and some other parts had some metal

junior ore
#

it depends on the era of the plane and time frame.

#

King Kong was.... 1912 I think... or 1920... let me check.

shadow minnow
#

So wooden fuselage most likely, would call that plane made from wood for sure

junior ore
#

1933

shadow minnow
#

Yeah wooden fuselage

#

Only engine is metal and some small parts

junior ore
#

aye

#

I mentioned wooden before, which even lasted to WW2 in a few planes in service.

astral haven
#

These are not military planes

junior ore
#

but coolio pictures of bi-plane in construction :D

#

dude it was WW1. literally any plane was basically a "war plane"

astral haven
#

Sure

junior ore
#

also like

#

in king kong it was maybe a converted crop duster

astral haven
#

But they were mostly metal after the war

#

They ran out of beer kegs to convert into planes...

shadow minnow
#

Hmm after and during ww2 yes

#

Between wars still lot were wooden

junior ore
#

during and after WW2 yes but we're talking King Kong era, 1933.

astral haven
#

No

#

wwi

junior ore
#

yes

shadow minnow
#

After ww1 there still were well ww1 style planes for a while

junior ore
#

gottem

astral haven
#

"Metal began to be used in aircraft as engineers sought to overcome challenges in strength and wind resistance, which only increased as speeds improved. The best-known early use of metal aircraft was in WWI, with Fokkers (as flown by the Red Baron) employing welded steel tube fuselages. Aluminum-covered Junkers are known as the world’s first all-metal fighter planes. All-metal aircraft construction became increasingly popular from 1919 to 1934, with the most common constructions being:

Aluminum or aluminum alloy with fabric-covered surfaces
All-metal monocoque structures"

junior ore
#

became increasingly popular is not "all planes" or fully. nor every nation.

#

nor every availability.

shadow minnow
#

So some military planes were still wooden some not

astral haven
junior ore
#

yes

shadow minnow
#

Well yeah but 1933 is in between

junior ore
#

but you sitll had wooden planes even in early WW2

#

and yeah 1933 is an inbetween date unless you're japan-china

astral haven
#

There are wooden planes in WWI like there are brick houses in california

shadow minnow
#

Could the plane carry the creature anyways?

fair gull
#

thats a new way to do tech talk

#

next we have steam engines

shadow minnow
junior ore
#

you just proving our point

fair gull
#

or how typewriters remove letters

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

In ww1 lot of planes were wooden

junior ore
#

no it was a majority in WW1

shadow minnow
#

It’s after ww1 things started to slowly change

astral haven
#

By the end of WW1 they were destroyed

shadow minnow
#

It says from 1919

junior ore
#

destroyed, says who?

shadow minnow
#

They called ww1 early use

#

So it’s clear wooden planes were still used for some period of time after

astral haven
junior ore
#

no?

#

you ahve 3 people here disagreeing with you on this dude.

astral haven
#

The few remaining historical "wooden" planes are units that were damaged in the war and never got repaired back then, and modern replicas

astral haven
junior ore
#

so? that doesn't changed anything

#

no tthe mob thing

#

wood doesn't last very long in terrible war conditions

#

nor during a time when preservation fo wr material wasn't great

astral haven
#

Yes
Which is why they ran out of wood and started using metal...

junior ore
#

it's more like its easier and better to use metal than wood. cheaper.

astral haven
#

Yes the first planes were in fact wood or metal with fabric like this

junior ore
#

thats what I said

#

you're agreeing with what I said earlier.

astral haven
#

But in the middle of wwi they decided wow we are running out of beer crates to turn into planes, and our seamstresses are getting tired

#

So they moved on to metal

junior ore
#

not all countries did, and I don't think it's a matter of running out of wood. More like it was better logistically to use a light alloy. And that doesn't change plenty still were made out of wood and plenty still remained wood. And they kept doing that even up to WW2.

#

you can find WW2 wooden fighter planes.

astral haven
junior ore
#

The british won

astral haven
#

That's
Technically correct

junior ore
#

Soviets Won

astral haven
#

The soviets lost aloooooot in the war

junior ore
#

United States Won

#

doesn't amtter.

#

they won

#

and had wooden planes

astral haven
#

The United States only came out financially crippled

junior ore
#

USA also had wooden planes. and won

#

stop shifting the goal post.

#

you said "won"

astral haven
#

If you want to be pedantic, noone won the war

junior ore
#

it's not about being pedantic

astral haven
#

The us says they won

junior ore
#
Carmonben — Today at 1:13 PM
Not that fought in the war on the winning side lel

your words.

astral haven
#

More accurate would be they lost the least

junior ore
#

again : stop moving the goal post.

astral haven
#

Anyways point is more that the wooden planes didn't win fights
The surviving wooden planes were the ones that didn't fight

junior ore
#

absolute farce of a statement.

#

you can look at plenty of War records of plane fights that disagree with you.

astral haven
#

What is the kill count of wooden planes in ww2

junior ore
#

oh so now you specify just WW2? thats not what you said earlier.

cursive summit
#

You peeps still raving about WWT

junior ore
#

You said wooden planes didn't win fights. you didn't say which war.

#

look up the IS plane series

astral haven
#

WW1 had wooden planes
But they ran out

junior ore
#

and others

#

you just pulling shit out of yer ass

#

astral haven

cursive summit

#

junior ore
# astral haven 🤷 speak for yourself

I literally called you out on your bullshit and dishonesty man. you can't deflect it back to me and everyone else can see it and you didn't even correct yourself when it was pointed out. So, yeah. Enough said.

cursive summit
#

Looking into it, some soviet design with 2 units built

astral haven
# junior ore look up the IS plane series

"The fuselage forward of the cockpit, wing spar booms and the combined lower inner wing and undercarriage assemblies were built up from welded 30KhGSA steel tubing, whilst the rest of the airframe was constructed from D16 duralumin throughout except for fabric covering on the control surfaces."

#

Duralumin is early aluminum alloy

cursive summit
#

They still use aluminum to this day

#

In avionics also in tanks and other vehicles

astral haven
#

They are trying to get away tho to be fair

cursive summit
#

Yeah there are better compounds nowadays

#

Ceramics are cool af

astral haven
#

And steel tube is very much gonezo

cursive summit
#

So what was the point of this conversation?

#

Whether wooden planes were relevant or not?

astral haven
#

Whether WWI planes would survive lightning strikes

cursive summit
#

No not really

astral haven
#

And tbh that doesn't really depend on if the plane was made of wood
If it was made of metal they still would have a bad time

cursive summit
#

No grounding, thing would just combust

#

Same shit with any plane really

#

Even modern ones don't take lightning well

#

You want some sort of grounding

astral haven
#

Well that's not exactly an option for planes lel

#

They just make themselves as conductive as possible on the outside so they act as a faraday cage

#

Modern composites aren't conductive enough so they use specially conductive coatings apparently?

cursive summit
#

787 is "50% composite, 20% aluminum, 15% titanium, 10% steel, and 5% other"

#

Aluminum would be the one for conductivity, I assume

#

Composite being "carbon fiber reinforced plastic and other composites"

astral haven
#

Oh no

#

Apparently not

cursive summit
#

You'd want that thing to be as light as possible

#

So they minimize the metals

#

Plastics are durable, but also lightweight

#

I assume metals are for the supportive beams to hold the structural integrity together

shadow minnow
#

Wood is well lighter weight too

cursive summit
#

Expensive, not durable, flammable

astral haven
#

They are rather unspecific

#

Besides this

shadow minnow
#

Anyways Boeing cares too much about profit now

astral haven
#

3d printed compressor blades are sweet tho

shadow minnow
#

Not instantly revealing issues they found because it would cost them money…

cursive summit
#

You wouldn't really want to reveal an issue so you can address it, no?

#

Or so that a potentially malicious group could use it to compromise the security of the vehicle

shadow minnow
#

Well they didn’t address it and many people died

cursive summit
#

I dunno, you don't want to cheap out on planes just cause of the human transport factor

astral haven
#

This isn't software issues like on a website

cursive summit
#

If that thing fails, you will get sued to death

We are talking strictly OS

cursive summit

I want to know what iOS has nowadays that Android doesn't

astral haven
shadow minnow

That’s not true

#

At least looking at flagships

astral haven

The question is how aggressive is the background task killer

astral haven
shadow minnow

IPhones do too

astral haven

Apple is aggressive at killing apps

cursive summit

Which is arguably best phone soc, but still it’s well amongst the best

astral haven
#

Yes

#

Arguably isn't is

#

The fastest processor is inarguably the z16
For phone socs it's alot more nuanced

shadow minnow
#

Anyways it’s very close to the best so doesn’t matter too much

#

Sure if you cool an soc way more you can get better performance too

astral haven
#

The problem is it's held back by ios

shadow minnow
#

I mean, even without active cooling, when I ran benchmarks outside in winter I got way higher scores lol

astral haven

astral haven
shadow minnow
astral haven

You can't lock apps in memory perpetually

shadow minnow
#

Especially now that you get free private relay if you have any iCloud plan which I do

astral haven
#

Multitasking is highly unpleasant

shadow minnow
#

Well I use my phone for most things I do and usually I don’t have issues with it

astral haven
#

The cameras are very samey
There's no good zoom or macro option

shadow minnow
#

But there are exceptions

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

I use my phone as a tool

shadow minnow
#

Though I wish they also made telephoto capable of macro

#

Would be better

astral haven
#

I need the front camera to be macro capable

#

I use my phone to see behind things

#

Doesn't work with rear cameras

shadow minnow
#

Yeah won’t get that

astral haven
#

All the barcode pictures I take with my iPhone are blurry asf

shadow minnow
#

But you can get the thing behind height mapped with 0.5mm accuracy dogekek

#

Using front camera

#

And the faceid sensors

astral haven
#

No I can't, the camera doesn't fit back there

#

And the depth sensor needs more than 2 inches to work iirc

#

Not that I have a depth camera on the iPhone work got me

#

You can't get a fingerprint and depth sensor 🤦

shadow minnow
#

True

#

Since depth sensor comes either with rear LiDar or faceid sensors or well both

#

The front one is more accurate for smaller distances

astral haven
#

My work phone

#

2020 se

shadow minnow
#

Yeah SE phones don’t get that
They just get good Socs

#

It’s a kinda weird product but I suppose makes sense considering some people buy iPhones just for it being an apple phone with front camera working lol

#

Wish I was joking

astral haven
#

But the SE is the fastest for my use

shadow minnow
#

Tbf I have also met people who didn’t want iPhone just because of the brand dogekek

astral haven
#

No other iPhone can be in app before it's up to my line of sight...

shadow minnow
#

Ngl I really liked how you could just press the TouchID button and it would instantly open

astral haven
shadow minnow

What?

astral haven

Yes

junior ore

gotta get them tracker data

#

More places need higher security.

astral haven

It's not hard apple
Just add sideloading, locking apps, and windows on iOS and I'll switch
Oh also get better zoom cameras and keep the fingerprint sensor

junior ore

I'l get a modern mac when it's............... uuuuuuhhh 🤔 affordable and not hardware proprietary

astral haven

Put the fingerprint sensor under the apple logo for chrissakes

shadow minnow

shadow minnow
astral haven
shadow minnow

shadow minnow

Just did

#

My fingers usually stop right under cameras

#

It’s a bit better when I use my phone with two hands but I often don’t

astral haven
#

Your fingers end up right over the logo when you grab it, then it shifts up while you pull it up to your face

#

At least mine do

shadow minnow
#

Can’t relate. But like, I have quite long fingers

#

Also newer iPhones have a bit different logo position I think

astral haven
#

Hmm

shadow minnow
#

It’s fully in middle, I think it used to be down or up

astral haven
#

I've got an se and an xr to check against

shadow minnow
#

It’s in the total middle now

#

Yeah it used to be higher

#

On xr

#

Makes sense you would reach it with your fingers in that position

#

But that changed

astral haven
#

Well they can change it back for the one with the fingerprint sensor

shadow minnow
#

Wouldn’t look good

#

The cameras god too big

#

Would have to be right under

astral haven
#

It would look the same...

shadow minnow
#

Well no because now the camera reaches the logo position

#

With XR you only had one small lens

astral haven
#

Heck
They could make the entire back a fingerprint sensor

shadow minnow
#

Also reminds me, apple logo on MacBooks I am pretty sure has some sensor in it

astral haven
#

It's already expensive lmao

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

Yes

astral haven
#

Why

shadow minnow
#

There is one spot with different color

#

It’s hard to see

#

I am not sure what is it for or if it’s actually a sensor

astral haven
#

It's probably not a sensor

shadow minnow
#

Well it’s on every MacBook or well the newer ones

#

And can only be seen from certain angles

#

What else could it be

#

Can’t find it rn for example with current lighting I have

astral haven
#

Machining artifact

shadow minnow
#

Got it

shadow minnow
astral haven

You mean the shape of a mill head?

shadow minnow

It’s bigger

#

If mill head was that big it wouldn’t have that much detail

#

I would take a photo if I could see it without phone flashlight lol

astral haven
#

Roughing vs finishing mill

#

Idk
Our M1 mini here doesn't have anything janky in the logo

shadow minnow
#

It’s very hard to see

astral haven
#

And the only MacBooks I own have white logos that are lit

shadow minnow
#

Under most lighting conditions impossible

shadow minnow
#

Like phone flashlight

#

If you move a bit it’s gonna appear

astral haven
#

Negatory

#

It's a solid bit of glass with black material under it

#

It's not the metal logo the new things have

shadow minnow

Bad photo but

astral haven

Bad photo is correct lol

shadow minnow
#

Got it, this time without edits

astral haven

Sensors under metal is hard

shadow minnow

Well it’s glass

Just tinted

astral haven

Hmm

#

Well dunno

shadow minnow

Kinda looks like when you have underscreen camera just probably sth else

#

Kinda got tempted to ask apple support what would they say, apple probably knows dogekek

#

Oh nvm I already tried

They suggested me to bring it to apple store to get it checked out lol

#

So that customer support person definitely didn’t know

That's what I thought and saw too, but apparently, it's possible to send it via a GET request. Otherwise, why would steam even state it in their API documentation?
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/webapi/IPublishedFileService in QueryFiles, required_kv_tags is one of them.

The format for it is available at this github page

how do u assume it needs to be a protobuf tho

ill check on WE

#

slow garnet
#

Ye np, reason why I'm assuming it's protobuf is because everything else so far I've tried has resulted in fuck all.

#

Also because steam uses protobufs.

#

Alternatively I say fuck it, and resort to scraping via the web parameters, but I would rather avoid that since it's likely more taxing, and I'll have to do an additional (approximated) 7,500,000 requests.

#

Where just using the API I would only need to do 250,000 requests.

#

Probably even less, if I use some other special parameters, done correctly, I would only need to do 25,000 requests.

fair gull

Mhm. "It turns out that the song contained one of the natural resonant frequencies for the model of 5400 RPM laptop hard drives that they and other manufacturers used."

THIS IS MAKIG ME LAUGH WAY TOO MUCH :')

#

.... the fact Beethoven was deaf by the time he reached 45 years old makes this a lot more cursed

shadow minnow
#

I had 0 ideas macOS devices have this built in

wheat plume
#

Wait, so you need a headphone amp to use 80 Ohm headphones??

shadow minnow
#

Depends

wheat plume
#

depends on what?

shadow minnow
#

On how good the 3.5mm is on your device whatever that is

#

Or well how good the built in amp is

wheat plume
#

oh hmm

shadow minnow
#

New MacBooks for example how high impedance amp that would be able to run that dogekek

wheat plume
#

Yeah

#

id use these for everything like my computer, laptop and Switch and Deck

shadow minnow
#

Well it’s hard to tell without testing or googling for each device

wheat plume
#

seems the Deck amp is solid

shadow minnow
#

Question is if the same can be says about the computer and laptop

#

My computer has pretty bad audio

#

It’s funny how they advertise high quality audio

#

Each 3.5mm output sounds totally different

#

All of them suck

wheat plume
#

my motherboard brags about having incredible high quality and crystal clear Japanese audio capacitors or whatever they are

#

tbf, it can make really good sound output

#

and there is no hissing or interference

wheat plume
#

asus?

shadow minnow
#

Nope gigabyte

wheat plume
#

oh

shadow minnow
#

It even has gold plated 3.5mm jacks to show how “good” they are dogekek

frozen ingot
#

they all use those crappy realtek chips anyways

shadow minnow
#

Yeah

#

Anyways time for LiS

stark bobcat
#

it doesn't just depend on the impedance of the headphones the sensitivity also matters

frozen ingot
#

motherboard integrated audio has pretty much been stagnant since the late 2000s from what I can tell

stark bobcat
#

not really true pcb layer counts as far as I can tell are increasing

#

so isolation is better

#

highly depends on the motherboards you are comparing

frozen ingot
#

that might improve noise floor or interference leaking into the audio path but the actual audio circuitry looks virtually unchanged since those days

#

and its not very good

stark bobcat
#

I mean you don't need super sophisticated circuitry for a DAC

#

apple dongle is all you need

#

amps are a bit more involved

frozen ingot
#

not too important tho I suppose since you'll get a separate audio interface if you care the least bit about audio fidelity

wheat plume
#

Saw a review from BadSeed Tech for the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm version

#

and he says you need an amp for them....dafuq

#

so idk, thats why im confused AF

frozen ingot
#

might not need but preferable to get the most out of them

wheat plume
#

My current headphones are a measly 23 Ohms

frozen ingot
#

38 ohms on mine so most headphone outs will run them just fine

deft marlin
#

I mean the new MacBook 14” and 16” have “high impedance” audio jacks

#

Haven’t seen what they’re rated for though

stark bobcat
#

steamdeck speakers are pretty nice for how small they are

#

I wish I could just annoy everyone on the plane by playing games without headphones
