window's default power settings will power down a drive after a while, so you may want to turn that setting off or change it.

final flame
#

I rarely turn my pc off for extended periods so data rot isn't really a issue

slow garnet
#

Not data rot I was talking about, just avoiding spin up/down cycles.

final flame
#

I mean

slow garnet
#

lul then yeah you're likely good as long as you don't have windows turning your disks off after a certain amount of inactivity

#

specifically this, dunno where it is now on win10

final flame
#

yea got it

slow garnet
#

cool, then you're set.

final flame
#

it's just in the power plan settings

slow garnet
#

well yes, but where is that lul, considering windows has like, multiple settings/controls

final flame
#

it's under the little hyperlink ofc

slow garnet
#

I meant to get to that thing

#

Anyway you found it so you're good

#

Whenever you get the drive, I'd suggest running a smart test if you don't mind waiting, just to ensure that the drive didn't get damaged in shipping or is broken out of the box/factory.

final flame
#

๐Ÿ‘

slow garnet
#

Best of luck on your purchase btw.

astral haven
#

What the hell
They got the right packaging but they put the wrong item inside...

final flame
#

thankfully so far the bad sectors are in the steam folder

slow garnet
#

And for a workshop addon of all things lul

final flame
#

We don't talk about my l4d2 stuff dogekek

slow garnet
#

Fair fair... I don't want to talk about my RimWorld addons either pepesweat

#

That, and the other one that turns all zombies into Louis. Can't find it though. Probably because of some racist stuff if I had to guess (context: some mods in the past (specifically a Stellaris mod which made all humans white if I recall) have been removed. my guess is this mod can be potentially seen as a racist one as well, even though that was likely not the intention).

astral haven
#

It's an entirely different product that I have no use for

shrewd thicket
#

That's unfortunate

astral haven
#

They are the same price

shrewd thicket
#

Even worse

astral haven
#

Eh
Same price is fine

#

If it was a much cheaper product it would look like I'm scamming them

shrewd thicket
#

Would've been great if it was more expensive

#

You could sell it for more than the product u want

astral haven
#

Eh
Dunno

shrewd thicket
#

Buy the product u want and have left overs

shrewd thicket
astral haven
#

Alot if the products from motu just don't appear on eBay much so I don't know how to sell it

shrewd thicket
#

Just put it up for a little higher than the product u want to buy

#

Could be a lot less than the new value which would make it very appealing

#

All depends on how much more expensive the product would've been

astral haven
#

Yep

#

But I'm just gonna return it normally

shrewd thicket
#

Let's say u want a 300$ product but they sent u a 700$ one, put it up for 400$ fixed price

astral haven
#

Very sad tho I was hoping I could set it up this weekend

shrewd thicket
#

Yeah that sucks

#

Check how the return policy is they might even charge u for a return...

#

I've had that happen before

astral haven
#

Nah

#

They sent the wrong product it's on them

#

I bought it brand new from a big retailer

final flame
#

Might as well back it up while ignoring bad sectors

astral haven
#

Use testdisk to back it up

final flame
astral haven
#

Ye

final flame
#

oke cool, I was using macrium reflect earlier and it was just giving me a error to run check disk

astral haven
#

Testdisk will give you the error but then it will keep backing up

#

It'll only skip the broken file

final flame
#

okay cool

fair gull
#

i personally use drivesnapshot for disk backups

GPT-3?

chrome estuary

When I was writing a paper on GPT, I think I remember reading that GPT-4 will take a little while but it'll be like hundreds of times more accurate

chrome estuary
#

here's the 4 images Dalle2 gave me for the same prompt. Now I should've told it to show the full tree with some camera lense and apertureand all that other stuff.

cursive summit
#

Oh good lord

reef patrol
#

JOY

final flame
#

Dalle2 seems to be more orientated toward photorealism

final flame
#

o

chrome estuary
#

that's from midjourney for "The end of Universe"

final flame
#

it's all insanely cool yet at the same time frightening

#

this could ruin peoples careers over time

chrome estuary
#

yeah. I've not really used Dalle 2 cause limited credits and I wanna make sure my prompts are good.

final flame
#

midjourney is only 600$ for a commercial license annual

#

what's the point of hiring a artist at that point

final flame
#

damn lol

#

the duck in the bg too

reef patrol
#

Sometimes it uh... yeah. Not sure why he has a giant darth vader pin on his jacket.

stark bobcat
final flame
#

the thing is with art, people spent their entire life perfecting their craft, whether it be in digital form or in physical form

#

mass produced automated products while are good, they still aren't as high quality as a handmade product

junior ore
#

Yeah but the AI thing aint as good as an human. Cause its not specific enough.

#

But its cool as heck

stark bobcat
#

still if someone loses their job at a car assembly line which I am sure also requires some skills and can't find a different job in the same space they will still have to learn something else which some people will not do well at

cursive summit
#

New models are incredibly object oriented

stark bobcat
#

automation sucks for jobs not matter the industry

final flame
#

it still requires human input and the output will change depending on what it's fed

junior ore
#

@stark bobcat except that assembly lines create new jobs, too.

stark bobcat
#

and society will have to adapt

cursive summit
#

Idk how tf do you stuff instructions into these models to process prompts so well, but AI is as good as a human nowadays

stark bobcat
#

and I bet also a lower amount

junior ore
#

Its a casualty of modern technology progression.

final flame
#

automation has it's benefits and drawbacks, for example a benefit would be lower prices for consumers

junior ore
#

that assumes the company aren't assholes

final flame
#

yea

junior ore
#

Automation is great

#

It lets people go do OTHER things

#

Thats the point

stark bobcat
#

I think the point from a manufacturers point of view is have to pay less for labour

junior ore
#

Its not just that

#

Its also reliability

#

More product floor meaning more supplies for the 8 billion people

stark bobcat
#

lets not kid ourselves most of the poor people don't really benefit much from automation if at all

junior ore
#

Thats just factually not true

#

Without automation there would be incredibly less food

#

And with less food, thats less food donated

#

Or less food in soup kitche s

#

Amongst other things

#

Like clothes

#

And other things of excess

stark bobcat
junior ore
#

It applies to all.

stark bobcat
#

which I should have made clear

junior ore
#

Im talking humanity

#

The more there is excess, the more that can be handed out.

stark bobcat
#

*could

#

in capitalism almost everything has a price

#

whoever pays that price is irrelevant

#

the thing higher supply does tho is decrease prices for a lot of things

#

which does help humanitarian efforts

junior ore
#

In everything there is a price, not just within a capitalism system.

stark bobcat
#

a price as in a monetary price

#

if you can't pay for a good you do not produce yourself and no one will give it to you for free or you just randomly find it on the street you will not obtain said good

junior ore
#

thats not true

stark bobcat
#

how do you get it then

junior ore
#

donations and aid are a thing and it happens. there are literal organizations that go about giving as much as they can.

stark bobcat
#

bro

#

someone still paid for that

#

it wasn't free

junior ore
#

so? the point is the person in need isn't paying for that.

#

also there do exists companies that give away their excess or goods for the sake of donations freely, besides costs of transportations via semi-trucks and manual labor of moving the goods.

#

so, like. it doesn't matter that I worked my job to make my pay. and then take some of that pay to hand over to buying something or hand the cash over to a donation drive for, say, getting children in need things they need and such

slow garnet
#

@final flame If I recall correctly (can't check right now, AFK), around 30 to 40C (varies, generally affected by ambient temp and what is being done at the time). Eitherway, lifespan and temperatures is a mixed bag from what I can tell.
https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/research.google.com/en//archive/disk_failures.pdf
"The figure shows that failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend."

final flame
#

interesting

#

I'll read through that later

slow garnet
#

Woops, wasn't done typing, damn it. Anyway, some other sources indicate that higher temperatures will increase drive failure.

#

Yeah no worries.

#

I'll get the actual temperatures when I can.

cursive summit
tepid violet
#

yeahhhh I read about that the other day

ashen spindle
#

yeah except thats the thing where they throw nft in the word salad but its not actually one so its just buzzwords

slow garnet
#

@final flame Hey, sorry for taking so long. My old 1TB Black is currently running at 42C on idle. Ambient temp is >31C. It's in a computer with power hungry components, so that likely isn't helping in terms of temperature. In winter, if I recall correctly, it was between 30c and 38c. The two newer drives I've got are 38C and 39C respectively, idling in an old, low power computer that's been repurposed as a NAS. I've got no temperatures for winter for these as I've only had them for a little while now.

ashen spindle
#

ok maybe I should take a look just to be sure dogekek

That Intel SSD life though

tepid violet

#

one of my samsungs is at 87% I think

ashen spindle
#

I mean I dont think the temp is too much given its under my gpu I'm just going to take a look at it and thats it

cursive summit
#

Samsung gets more usage and it's barely fallen

#

Okay this is concerning

#

It's idle rn

slow garnet
#

Regardless high temps is not good IMO. High temps can slow down read/writes if I recall correctly, and also, generally speaking, high temps is not good for electronics. Then again, likely you'll upgrade before it dies.

tepid violet
#

lmao dw I doubt mine is much cooler lmao

Ofc. Thermal stresses.

But idk much about it

cars, gambling machines, big video walls idk

depends on usecase

China has done the sensible thing of "Let's have some nukes, and upkeep them so they actually work"

junior ore
#

Aye

cursive summit
#

Whereas Russia probably still thinks their 1950s nukes are still functional arsenal

frozen ingot
#

china has very little modern wartime experience, their idea of making weaponry is looking at napkin drawings of western and russian military equipment and trying to copypasta it

junior ore
#

They probably reserviced their 50s nuke. In alibaba electronics.

stark bobcat
#

you guys don't think testing is a thing

junior ore
#

Russia obviously didn't do any proper testing

cursive summit
#

Testing on what? Uyghurs?

junior ore
#

Not any thst weren't rigged

stark bobcat
#

talking about china

junior ore
#

Ah

#

Its better to assume chinas army is effective, regardless of experience.

frozen ingot
#

and all that testing did the russians real good

junior ore
#

There isn't anything to indicate pure incompetence

frozen ingot
#

testing vs actual warfare are two very different scenarios

junior ore
#

No but you can test if your ERA actually works

#

Or isnt stuffed with coardboard

#

Or that your fuel wasnt sold for hooker and blow

#

Or that your MRE wasnt from cold war

stark bobcat
#

china is building most of the stuff you own you don't think they could build proper military hardware too?

frozen ingot
#

most of it from instructions given to them by foreign entities

stark bobcat
#

bruh

junior ore
#

Nightman be real here

stark bobcat
#

china has done a lot of rnd

frozen ingot
#

its only recently they've started to get the hang of making half-decent devices on their own

#

like the last decade and half at most

junior ore
#

Its like nightman never heard of Shenzen

cursive summit
#

China's arsenal is heavily inspired by Russian stuff

#

From air to ground to navy

frozen ingot
junior ore
#

Yeah china makes shitloads of their own electronic designs themselves

frozen ingot
#

I am well aware they make a lot of stuff themselves

junior ore
#

That doesn't mean that what you said didnt came from your ass

frozen ingot
#

am also aware most of it has been trash until quite recently

#

like name a chinese tech product made before the 2010s that's notable

junior ore
#

Don't need to?

stark bobcat
#

it's not trash anymore let me assure you and also they can afford to buy stuff they lack too

junior ore
#

Aye

frozen ingot
#

well designing and building military tech isn't quite the same as copypasta the same smartphone design for years, but sure, they've come a long way in a short time

#

fact remains that they still lack a lot of experience in those fields

junior ore
#

Again

#

Speculation

cursive summit
#

China is heavily tied into russian avionics and other research, this is a fact

#

But they have been decoupling themselves well

junior ore
#

We aren't going to know how effective china is until they go to a war

frozen ingot
#

obviously

junior ore
#

Also

#

Even if the tech is russian origins : the fault of russian military hardware is corruption and cheaping out on those specs.

#

China probably doesnt have that issue

#

Also terrible leadership

#

Terrible commanders

cursive summit
#

You really think a crappy drone that's supposed to fit a Sony camera and a phone SoC is a repurposeable hardware piece? lul

stark bobcat
#

SoCs are very repurposeable

cursive summit
#

Oh, fun

#
#

Oil is back to pre-war levels

#

Russia must be very happy that their oil is doing badly

frozen ingot
# junior ore Speculation

I wouldn't say chinas lack of combat expertise is speculation, but I still wouldn't underestimate anyones army until I've actually seen it in action

cursive summit
#

Everyone believed Russia was no. 2 in the world just last year, just saying

frozen ingot
#

just that my expectations aren't very high

#

yes that

cursive summit
#

My expectations are incredibly low for China

#

But they are clever and improving fast

#

Within next ten years they'd be a global fighting force for sure

#

What they haven't had until recently was actual command power

#

But they are working on that as well, that's good

frozen ingot
#

yeah they're not really stuck in some 90s alcoholic delirium of past soviet glories like russia apparently has been

cursive summit
#

So at least if China invades someone, they shouldn't suck like russia did

#

But China's state of things is far harder than Russia's

#

You can invade Ukraine from the thousands of km's of land border

#

What China has is to invade Taiwan via sea

#

That is orders of magnitude harder

#

And I still firmly don't believe China would not get wiped out even getting close to Taiwanese shores

#

Taiwan is stocked up on ASM's

stark bobcat
#

doesn't china have a massive navy?

frozen ingot
#

problem is taiwan is an island and its size/population is kinda miniscule compared to the almost unfathomably massive mainland china

cursive summit
frozen ingot
#

china could just keep sending meat to the grinder for years and wear them out if they wanted

cursive summit
#

China's investing heavily into naval forces, far more than any other branch of theirs

#

Cause they suck compared to U.S navy considerably

#

But they are closing the distance

cursive summit
#

After that they should work on air forces, those aren't good either

stark bobcat
#

yeah so I have 10bn dollars but i still suck compared to jeff bezos

high end office chairs are really good for gaming if you can afford a $300-400 chair

well the main issue is

cursive summit

I found this locally

fair gull

i wanna use it as a sort of permanent attachment to my macbook to offload the code stuff so i can reset macos more efficiently

#

rn i have to git clone tons of shit every time and i just cant be bothered with that any more

cursive summit

1TB read speeds pepesweat

fair gull
#

i only need read speed mainly

#

write can be 100 or 200

#

read shoyld easily be 400 or more preferably

and the mentioned 128/256 would easily suffice

#

sad its usb-a

#

would be perfectly sized for a more permanent attachment

cursive summit
#

Is price an issue?

fair gull
#

no

#

just size

#

and speed in read terms

cursive summit
fair gull
#

too big

#

the black part (which seems to be the flashdrive) is usb-a and uses an adapter

so basically the samsung fit just with an adapter for c included

cursive summit

Annoying that some manufacturers don't even list R/W speeds

fair gull

dont intend to remove it thats why i dont want a normal sized stick

You know the product is shit when they really want to advertise USB 3.1, but don't list transfer speeds

#

Anyways that kingston one seems solid for a tiny build

fair gull
#

either the kingston or sumsun

#

altho the kingston has 100mb read according to amazing

fair gull
#

maybe i should look for super slim usb3.1 a to c adapters

#

altho those would make small sticks even longer

#

ill get the samsung one and will have to deal with unplugging it and plugging it back in

shrewd thicket

Would this be overkill if I want a really easily adjustable arm for my 34"

#

Cuz I have an arm right now but moving the monitor works like shit cuz it's just some cheap generic arm

shrewd thicket

My goal is to make my monitor feel lightweight when adjusting but I might be cutting my own fingers by getting an arm rated for way heavier monitors thus having to adjust it and ruining the effect maybe?

fair gull
#

i know those arms

#

they have a weight adjustment screw

#

if u dont adjust it the arm either always goes down due to monitor weight or always up

#

if u adjust it right it will be easy to move but stay where u put it

#

also has adjustments for side to side and stuff

solar hinge

@reef patrol this has some truth to it ๐Ÿ˜›

cursive summit

#

1TB space 1GB read speeds?

#

That's not a stick that's a whole ass drive

fair gull
#

no they make 256 version

#

for 40bucks

cursive summit
#

That's still ridiculously fast

fair gull
#

same price as the samsung but better read and write

fair gull
#

thats

#

disappointing

cursive summit
#

1GB/s read is far better than SATA drives

fair gull
#

very disappointing

fair gull
cursive summit
#

Which is surprising cause I'd expect SATA to do better

#

USB 3.2 g2 is solid I suppose, 20gb/s max perf on the standard

fair gull
#

ye

#

in the tests i saw the random read on the kingston is 150mbit or so

#

basically already half the seq speed of the samsung

cursive summit
#

So the 1 gb/s is burst

fair gull
#

and realworld test with games apparently usually also get 400mb/s

fair gull
cursive summit

That's still very comparable to SATA drives

fair gull

not some random actual load
