Proton is a compatibility layer ain't it? IE it's taking rocket league's window code and translating? That would be a lot easier then making a native linux build as Proton is maintained by Volvo rather then the RL developers, at most the developer might have to hand some code of the game over to the Proton devs to get fix bugs with Proton regarding Rocket League.

Also yeah, there's no point for most developers to maintain Linux versions, especially when they never stop updating a game. You're essentially stuck maintaining code that only works for a fraction of the audience who probably doesn't buy a lot of microtransactions on top of being really niche, making it unjustifiable to keep putting so many man hours into it, when that same work can go into the primary platforms and improve those. Especially since the niche platform; Linux can run a windows VM (that works most the time) or at worst get a dual boot system running. It's a phenomena known as network effect, people gravitate to the compatible hardware/software because it works. Companies develop for the systems that have the most users. Then you get a self reinforcing cycle of "Customers buy Windows because Windows has everything whilst competitors struggle to find equivalents tools and toys, People make things for Windows because it has more users, giving Windows more tools and toys"

That said though they don't have much of a reason for that. People will play on bedrock if they're forced to regardless of differences like that, and won't willingly move to bedrock if all the dealbreakers (scummy monetization, lack of control, lack of modding, etc...) are still present.
Even then, there's tons of mods that may never get ported to bedrock IF they allow modding, so there's almost certainly always gonna be a reason to play Java.
