It has alot to do. Side quests and random occurrances happening in between the main missions, if ur willing to explore a little.
And then the game fucks you over by killing the main protagonist, the character youve built up most sympathy with, and replaces it with a...less likable character who's voice actor sounds like he was forced into the job.
