Its a graphicsAPI, Java Minecraft uses OpenGL currently, which is slow, unmaintained and will be dropping support for MacOS soon

OpenGL is also preventing Minecraft from really getting better performance as its not very optimal on newer hardware now

The main 3 graphics APIs are OpenGL, Vulkan and DirectX
Apple made their own one called Metal thats exclusively used on MacOS

There has sadly never been a truly great PC version of DS1. Prepare to Die Edition needs mods to be able to render above 720p or go above 30 fps afaik. The remaster has mostly inferior changes to the visuals

It's hard to ignore the very low resolution look of how the original looks when unmodded

7's been out for a year. It tried the Humankind formula to push the game in a new direction and people really didn't like it. It just received a major overhaul patch that turns it back into Civ.

Civ V was my favorite, except that it is horrendously unstable for multiplayer.

Civ VI is the most fleshed out, but struggles with a few key points: balance and being punished by early decisions not being known to be bad until eons later.

Civ VII is probably the best "start" to a new Civ game in terms of content and potential. But it has its own issues, particularly relating to the game being the first to ever actively take from the player

One thing that 7 has I wanted in earlier games - Navigable rivers.

That's a hard pill to swallow... Taking away cities and downgrading into towns, taking away units to balance the world... Plus the disjointedness of the eras results in large portions of time when taking geopolitical actions is mostly useless because you don't have enough time to finish your goals in the given era

Oh - One thing I really miss from Civ IV. Colonial Powers. In 4 when you settled in "the new world" - aka. another continent set part with water, it would develop into a new player, a vassal state.

(And no pesky city states that usually just end up being easy targets for the aggressive AI in 6)

As for the Switch 2, Nintendo chose to use cartridges which are Switch 1 compatible. The downside is that they interface over eMMC and just can't achieve the same speeds as the internal SSD or a microSD Express card. Even as a slower medium, they're also very cost prohibitive for publishers at $18 USD per cartridge for the largest 64GB option.

Even if the cartridges were large enough and fast enough for a 100GB game, such as FF7R which is roughly 90GB on Switch 2, you'd need a massive price premium for consumers or have the publisher eat the costs.

Game Key Cards are a reasonable middle ground in practice, but even those are $8 per unit.

Flash memory is just too expensive for the Switch 2 to have proper physical game distribution.
