When it comes to account issues it doesn't matter if you have PS3 or PS5, it's still the same PSN account
And keeping servers afloat I doubt costs more than a few hundred bucks a year, guess they can sacrifice that much given how many consoles and online memberships is being sold

I think you'd be surprised how much it actually costs to operate those servers and keep a service that old alive. Even the hosting is all on-prem, it takes more than one FTE to look after a something as large as that with any decent uptime and keep it updated to prevent security issues as well as protect their data. A few hundred thousand is more appropriate. Hell, backing up my homelab Kuberentes cluster to Backblaze's S3 compatible storage costs a few hundred bucks a year. I doubt a few hundred covers a month's worth of electricity to power the infrastructure, assuming it's not in the cloud, which just inflates the costs.
