You generate a million combinations of a code and assign them to a database. That's how Steam knows your code is what it says it is.

And then those codes are sold off to resellers on other platforms.

You're going to run out at some point and need to "reprint" more. Clearly Valve underestimated demand on their end, and resellers using Steam codes had to wait for Valve to get around to printing more.

I think if we’d designed a game for Switch 2 from the ground up it might have been different. As it was, we’d build a game around the SSDs of the initial target platforms, and then the Switch 2 came along a while later. In this case I think our leadership made the right call.

That's just not true. I can play the games I mentioned earlier and provide you screenshots, if you'd like. Spider-man 2 with RT @ 4k and 240FPS is truly strunning.

It's the UE5 slop with Lumen that performs poorly, imo.

Which, UE4 in it's early times didn't perform well either. Just takes time and adoption.

Notice the frame drops too. In a single player game going from 170 to 125 isn't 1/10th as noticable as accurate, real-time relfections of the world.

I think RT is more noticable with darker environments, with daylight global illumination its kinda hard to tell apart except for how light sources behave with real-time changes

RTGI isn't as exciting as actual reflections imo. Lighting tricks with modern raster techniques are actually pretty decent. Reflections are not.

The same argument of trading frames for effects was the entire argument against pixel-shading pipelines.

When Counter-Strike added pixel-shading to DE_DUST, half the internet flipped out back then because older videocards either couldn't cope at all, or the new ones under-performed.
