Either through hitting light attacks or changing up by holding down the heavy attack button

As for Half Life, I think it has similar issues as Halo with it being too slow and restricted for it's own good.
And it then doesn't have the same redeeming factors like the atmosphere of Doom 3 or combat from Painkiller to compensate.
I played Doom 3 and Half Life 2 one after another and it's honestly staggering to see how much more detailed and atmospheric Doom 3 is.

I don't find an instakill mechanic to be a good solution for seperated players. The bots also often leave you alone in fetch missions making solo playthroughs even more infuriating.
And once again, the special infected are inconsistent. Their animations do not line up with their actions. And so avoiding them reliably becomes impossible.

The only advantage that Halo has over Quake or UT is in multiplayer, gadget tools become more viable. Be it teleporters, shield walls, transport vehicles, healers, you name it.
Except the problem is that Halo has none of that. And the very few tactical tools it does have are worthless. So the only strength that the game can fundamentally have with it's core gameplay, it doesn't even use that.

Notice how I put TF2 in the legendary tier despite it technically having the slower gameplay of Halo/HL? Slow movement speed, weapon limits, reloads. Well I do that because it plays those limitations in it's strenght. Adding more sandbox elements and different clases that can do different things. It give the game more versatility. It makes the game different in a good way.
Halo was a straight downgrade from UT/Quake. With no upsides.

doom eternal to me kinda took its niche mechanic with the parkour a bit too far in places, felt like I was playing super mario galaxy rather than doom at times, just because you try to innovate doesn't mean you always hit the mark

But even that doesn't matter now. Halo and CoD ran themselves into the ground. CS is now a trading site with a game in there somewhere.
And frankly, I don't think there are any multiplayer games out there right now that people genuinenly enjoy. They just have nowhere else to go.
