recently that seems to be less and less true. development costs are going up and sales arent really increasing that much. its becoming more reasonable to not develope a game and just sell the success it had at one point.
or taking "good" games and repackaging them under more well known studios. take a good action shooter from a smaller indie dev and then instead of selling it from that studio, have it sold as a new ID software game, its more likely to get attention using Doom as a reference for the quality of the studio developing the game

oh yeah, there is 100% a short term gain to be made for closing them. in that point though. IPs are what are called "intangible assets" and they can retain those, which will still hold value to an extent, while not having to pay to upkeep the studio. case in point right now being Hi-fu Rush. microsof gets to keep that, and add it to the companys total value while not having to pay the studio that made it. its a win win for them in the shareholder respect.
