Honestly I think it's a complete mistake that Snipers are considered a must have for a lot of multiplayer games. They are awful, especially in games like TF2/Overwatch, and add nothing of value for the average player in these games.

In team games you'll often have people select the sniper and then refuse to play the objective, and often because they can't hit their targets consistently it will feel like you are playing with a man or two (or in TF2's case potentially half the team) down. On the other hand it's not fun playing against snipers, as often they hang real far back forcing you to traverse the whole map while trying to stay out of line of site just to take them out. If they are a good sniper it's not any fun to play against them because often you'll just be instantaneously dead with no opportunity for counterplay.

Like yea shotguns can instantly kill you as well, but often you'll see them running at you, giving you a chance to counter somehow. Snipers you'll turn a corner and get your head deleted because they were hardscoping the entire time.

the best multiplayer shooters I've played that have "sniper" roles are the ones that are historically set before widespread issue of optics, severely restricting the number of scopes on a given team, or simply no sniper role at all, opting for a standard rifleman kit of a bolt-action
so the irons end up being the sights of choice anyway, and you can engage reasonably well at any range with those

give absolutely everyone a bolt action rifle with irons and you get a dramatically different gameplay system, one I personally enjoy quite a lot

TF2 at least realized snipers were a problem, and reduced their power hard yeah, but for ordinary players they are still a pain in the butt.

For games like Overwatch the issue is much worse, since the team sizes were so small, having even 1 snipers meant either you had a useless teammate, or your head would get exploded everytime you turned a corner. For games like Destiny 2 not only might you instantly die turning a corner, but snipers will slide out a corner and pop your head, and even if you try to gun them down while they do it they'll have enough flinch resistance that they can still pop you.
