I've actually noticed I prefer games with less detail, i.e in some new games I get a headache in forests where they've rendered all the fucking leaves it's so obnoxious. Probably due to AA/resolution. Similar to what high FPS does to filmed movies. Easier to spot the differences to real life. Cartoony doesn't have that issue because it's easily separated, so it doesn't irk you after a while.

Steam version has two major differences.
- It's graphical by nature, no need to install tilesets just to get this.
- Redesigned UI with "most" controls remade for mouse.
Though the 2nd one will become part of the free one eventually as well.

Can always watch a Let's Play from a good storyteller and see if it's for you. It's the polar opposite of Rimworld. In Rimworld the entire world revolves around you, the storyteller designs storylines for you specifically.
Dwarf Fortress couldn't care less about you. Everything it does is for the world, not you specifically. If you get swept up in something major, it isn't because the game decided to do it with you involved, you just happened to be there.
