Portable gaming has always been a niche anyway, the most popular I remember it being was the PSP and DS days. Games were developed and release specifically for the device. And there were some really cool games out on those things back then. Now it doesn’t have the same value cause it’s all just ports of “indie” games. If these companies want a bunch of people walking around with their devices on the subways and buses and shit, it’s gonna take a lot more than affordability
Mobile gaming is wayyy more profitable anyways, there’s about a billion games on app stores. Because everyone can afford a smart phone through there carriers contracts but not everyone can afford (or wants to) lug around a brick that can run dogshit games
The only thing I could see is a Switch and that’s got 2 uses

As someone who has recently used a very capable thin laptop I still am more comfortable using my deck for gaming.
Laptops have always irritated me which is why I swapped mine out in uni for an iPad instead.
Having a laptop everywhere you go traveling, especially on train daily like I did is a pita and there's next to no room but also it just doesn't make sense to boot up a laptop to play a game.... I used to play Lego games and telltale.... Just found it irritating unless I was fully setup and around my grandparents.
Steam deck I can just turn on and game almost instantly, comfortably and cross save via steam.... Without being restricted to android based games or a switch.
I can also play pretty much decades if games on one device.... Including new ones and hell I was playing the new bayoneta the other day on the bus.
I would have killed to have a steam deck during my uni days....

You'll need to unbind WASD ingame, as well as force the UI to always show PC controls, otherwise it will constantly flicker back and forth between PC and Xbox icons.
The curve could probably use some finetuning as well.
