You could use something other than a dedicated tool to pry them off but you risk slipping or somehow damaging the switches. Having to solder each switch on and off the board is what’s actually impractical. Being able to just yoink a switch off a board and hotswap it with a single tool is in my opinion the pinnacle of practicality.

Just searching “Legendless keycaps” is surprisingly effective. A lot of keycap sets can come with all (like 100 or so idk) keycaps, so you don’t really need to worry much about if they’ll fit, just make sure you’re buying the right layout

it's not so much they won't fit, but the sensors are different - if you tried installing KS-20 switches like the Gateron Jade Pros onto a keyboard that's not compatible (ie. Meletrix Boog75 HE) then you'll end up frying the sensors on the keyboard
