Honestly, I don't know, S1 was extremely weak, I don't think he truly knew how to approach it, season 1 is basically completely isolated from the rest of the seasons, my mum didn't like it either even though she's a huge BB fan but BCS essentially becomes BB but better and less dragged.
Sometimes shows take time to like them too which tbh is a flaw in the show imo, peaky blinders took me 3 times before I forced myself through episode 1 and 2 and it's now one of my top 10 shows
