I would say to me, its more like Imu IS darkness, where as the Yami Yami just copies that into fruit form. Like how Luffy copies Nika's power through his fruit, but he isn't actual him. I think Davy Jones on the other hand, probably was a D that sided with Imu, but then Imu double crossed him. I don't think "king of the world was a position, but rather a title. Not something to be passed hereditarily as Rocks thought, but more similar to being King of the Pirates.
