It’s a 180 in that it went from her only subconsciously recognizing Brook enough to like his music, to her having flashes of memories of her old life 50+ years ago, to her suddenly seeming to remember enough to be besties with Brook again and pleading for his safety. Any question of Gunko’s morality is thrown out the window, because now we find out that she was somebody else that was brainwashed into Gunko, then double-mind controlled in Elbaf to be Imu’s vessel. I would have preferred that Gunko be an antagonist with her own agency, and Princess Shuri be this fleeting memory of the person she was 50+ years ago. She shouldn’t have made such a sudden turn around, and it should have felt more hopeless that she’d ever become who she was completely, if at all, but I guess this is One Piece, where nothing bad ever stays.

I kinda have to make peace with it, because it’s not like it’s going to change, but I don’t know. Something I’m just going to heavily criticize. I’m not a fan of stealing any agency from Gunko, even if it was the agency to do bad things. I always found it interesting, wondering how the story would tackle Gunko, being a character that was already evil but is then possessed to be even more evil. “Even if she remembers her memories as a good person, and they break her free from Imu’s possession, obviously you can’t ignore all the bad things she’s done.” Seeing the story reveal that she’s just double-brainwashed is just so sucky, because it takes all the blame away from her and removed any debate about her that could be had.
