In the case of contracts it's your basic textbook definition of regeneration. Whatever has been penetrated, sliced, or cut off gets regrown. We've seen Harald for example regrow his foot, and the multiple stab wounds inflicted by the giant soldiers.

This type of regeneration is automatic it doesn't need the user to be on guard whatever is cut gets regrown. But the only way to prevent regeneration is by exhausting the person with regen using conquerors haki. So like an attack with conquerors haki won't necessarily negate their regeneration, but multiple acoc attacks wear down the users regeneration. Initially they'd still be regenerating but at a slow rate, but give it some time and your acoc attacks would have them overwhelmed to the point where they can't regenerate anymore.

At the critical point if you don't finish them off, they'd eventually regenerate, so like since Rocks didn't finish off Garling on God Valley, he was able to regenerate but it took him a long time to do that.
