I personally think Sanji is better written, as he was way more flaws, and a much more in-depth back story, plus you see his growth much more noticeably throughout the series. For example, Zoro was at a dojo, kept on loosing fights against his best mate, she fell down the stairs, and now he wants to be strong. Whereas Sanji, he was born into a family where his father decided to immorally mold them into inhumane wealons with no emotions whatsoever. His mother stopped this via the use of drugs which kill her in the process, but the drugs only affected Sanji, hence he keeps his emotions, but lacks the superhuman side. Due to his lack of strength, he gets bullied by his enhanced siblings, with no end in sight. He is seen as a disgrace to his family and a failure. However... Not all hope is lost. His sister, Reiju, who laughed at him just like the others, cares for him. She feels sympathy. But she also has superhuman powers, so she isn't a disgrace, however she cant go against their tyrannical father's word, and must follow him and obey him daily. She helps him escape, and escape he does. He boards a ship, stows away... But the ship was raided by some pirates who took care of him instead. However, he hjts yet another stroke of bad luck —a storm sinks their ship, and he's left stranded on a deserted island with the captain. The Captain gives him all the food, and eats his own leg instead. After days of near-starvation, they board a ship, go to island, and buy their own ship, to make a sea restaurant. The Captain then teaches him both fighting prowess, cooking skills and morals and becomes his mentor. See how much harder that hits?
