He’s an acolyte of pacifism. It’s not fully rational or anything but I can see what Oda’s doing with the character. I really like him, even though he’s made some bad decisions. He has really good intentions that are spurred by an identity crisis he has for not only himself, but for his entire culture he leads and represents. He wants connection with the world, a broader community for his people to exist in, which IS a noble thing. A really good thing to desire. The issue is, that greater community comes at a cost of having to associate with the WG/Navy. He’s blinded to the atrocities that he’s seen, like slavery and the genocide of Xebec’s people that Xebec told him was about to happen, because he wants to see Elbaph as apart of the world around them, even if it means they have to be associated with a WG that does some heinous shit.
