They don't find out who he's actually related to or anything really important about him. Him until Marine Ford. After Marine Ford is done, there is a manhunt for Luffy All over the world. However, he's being hidden on an island that no one can seem to get to. He stays hidden for 2 years, and people think he and most of the straw hats are dead. Then he returns after 2 years. Years makes a big splash and is made into an emperor within only a few months time. There's not a lot of wiggle room in between all that.
