Brook was an army commander for a 'certain kingdom' when he met Gunko. The fact the Kingdom hasn't been named makes me believe it's name is somehow significant. I also think that whatever event allowed Brook to break away and become a pirate connects not only to Gunko but the environment which Lafitte was born into.
