Alabasta Crocodile lost access to his Haki, his ambitions crushed, but being beaten by Luffy proved his cynicism wrong and gave him a bunch of reasons to actually believe in himself (and the incredible power of spite). Plus, he's always been after the WG while Doffy's kinda... dubious on that front. Doffy in Dressrosa was sitting pretty.
