That would give you some confidence. He's not afraid of him being safe any longer because he believes he can hold his own.

He was less inclined to do any of this with Ace because he was sailing with the world's strongest man who seemed to have his good favor and Ace respected him a lot.

I don't think any of these points are contradictory. Like you can't be serious and say garp is lame because he didn't build them a house or something.

You also have to keep in mind that One Piece's on screen timelines are very short, and the time between Luffy becoming a pirate and him crashing Enies Lobby wasn't a long time at all.
