Oda does combat set pieces well. The big moves. When I say his choreography is weak I mean the connective tissue, the easy to follow paneling the simple interactions. He sets up hype moments and cuts away and cuts back for the set pieces, combat is less his focus of course but we also lose clarity. I’d agree One Piece has some of the most striking combat panels in manga, and thematically it’s rich, but battles themselves are not satisfying out of context. I can watch an early Naruto or Dragon Ball fight and enjoy the simple moves for being clever or easy to follow and satisfying without context just as a contest.
