You have to imagine their shock and guilt, throughout the show Luffy was there for everyone of them and helped them deal with their problems. Zoro was saved from execution. He saved Sanji what was essentially his home and father. He saved Usopp island. He saved Nami her island. He saved Chopper his island and showed that him not being a human didn't matter. He helped Robbin her want to live again and fought the world government. He helped Franky to get revenge on the world government. Saved Brook from years of loneliness and got his shadow back.

But the one time he needed their help they couldn't help him. Also at that point of the story Luffy doesn't even know if his crew is alive or not and thinks Sabo is dead so in that moment Luffy lost the last person he loved.||

The reason he died now is he ignored his crewmates who mentioned Akainu is just provoking and should be ignored. Even Akainu was shocked that Ace fell for such a stupid trick.
