kinda out of options though. campbell sucked for months last season
now that i'm thinking about it, good move to not pay campbell long term. murray has two years at 4.7 mill, so if he sucks still only 2 instead of 4 or 5 years on campbell
plus his contract expires when matthews and nylander does and one year before marner and tavares. worst case the leafs lose one or both of their key guys and are forced to retool or rebuild. In that scenario, they don't have a potential anchor of a deal for a guy who's pretty much just voodoo magic at this point
best case matthews and nylander want to re-sign after the 2023-2024 season or extend next offseason and now they have money and flexibility
marner same case but a year out. in both cases a campbell contract would likely be on the books. tavares could be back after, but the leafs aren't going to pay him close to his current deal at the rate it is going.
murray could be cut or traded if he isn't good next season, since he'd just have one year left
looks like the buyout for his contract is fairly cheap. It'd be about 500k cap hit next season then a 2 mill cap hit the year after. In that case sure I guess. It won't cost much if he truly sucks
