Which leads to signing free agents to big contracts in hoping they can still play a few rounds in the playoffs every year. Example A: Detroit Red Wings in the 2010s, Example B: New Jersey Devils of the mid 2000s.

Not sure about this since I don't know much about Ten Hag. However, I read that the players hated Patricia and the GM at the time Bob Quinn and they celebrated his firing, and that he wasn't particularly a great coach beforehand. The owner stood by them till the point they couldn't, while fans and players were more against it when they started to regress with no improvement. The Belichek coaching tree didn't have that great of a history either in becoming head coaches themselves as well.
