Say we expand to 14 teams. If we give the power 4 winners a bye, we are left with 5 winners in the matchups 4-12. This doesn’t work having 9 teams that need to play
Give only 2 team byes makes it work to give every team a matchup, but you are rendering half the power 4 conference championship games useless.
Go to the 16 team. If we give the top 4 teams a bye we are left with 6 teams left after 5-16 play, and then 10 teams, which means an odd number of teams after those second round teams play.
Make it a 2 team bye and it has the same problem as the 14 team playoff
