The city does have a litany of issues, but the primary problem is that the Athletics are trying to front the public with the foot of the bill- there have been negotiations and last I read the city was trying to help contribute to funding it by setting aside money for entertainment, but the owners have been playing hardball and don’t want to invest in the town back and have been flippant with their deals. Oakland is not the greatest place by any means, but it’s not the sole cause.
A lot of people look to the situation with the Raiders and the Warriors as some kind of unifying factor, but the situations regarding those teams were very different.

The Warriors were invested into heavily by the owner who wanted to make the team better, and was already set on leaving for SF because of the bigger potential market.

The Raiders didn’t like having to share with the Athletics in the condition that everything was in, and wanted their own stadium. They had already left once and come back. The Athletics held the Lease on the coliseum so there were multiple people in the drivers seat. It basically kept the quality of an NFL team contingent on an MLB team.

The Athletics were always the Oakland favorite. The Athletics made it clear that it was their spot, signed a 10 year lease to dig their feet in and keep the Raiders from building next to them.

The city is still in debt from when they mutilated the Stadium and built Mt.Davis for the Raiders and got fucked, so naturally the City is skeptical about investing when the Athletics have been intentionally trying to oust them for years.

The owner of the Raiders I believe actually bashed the Athletics for fucking over the Bay Area for driving them out and trying to leave themselves. The difference between the Warriors, Raiders, and Athletics is that the former two were willing to invest in their product.

As for the City of Oakland itself, it has always been struggling in some capacity and needs various systemic improvements in a number of ways, and the people there have been wrestling with it for a long time.

But the truth is that a sports team could still easily be successful there if the Teams put in the effort, the Warriors prove that.

There are a number of Cities with just as many issues that are not the most fun to be that have no problems maintaining an MLB team.

Then againthe Warriors had far less competition locally (as far as I’m aware, I’m not a basketball fan), while the Raiders and the Athletics split the Bay with other teams.

Despite sharing potential audiences the Athletics managed to create a culture of their own and have a very solid fanbase- the Battle of the Bay is a fun and friendly competition between the Giants and the A’s, and there was always a sentiment that it was in the better interest of Baseball to have two teams because it expands the overall audience of the sport.

If Oakland and the surrounding locals ever favored a sports team it was the Athletics, the owners just don’t favor us back.

Although to be fair the Athletics never liked sharing with the Raiders Either. Football used to tear up the lawn. Very different kinds of sports to play on the same field. And the Raiders I’m sure had their share of greedy reasons to leave Oakland, and Oakland is complicit in its own ways for being a whole bag of worms to deal with for everyone when it comes to making progress in any kind of fashion and have made a multitude of bad choices over the years.

sharing fields is always tricky. you need extra work to make it work and it usually ends up with crappy fields for both teams. they tried using handegg stadiums for the copa america, the pitches aren't even the same size and it ended up being a disaster. The best decision a team can make is get themselves their own stadium

My parents were at the game Rickey Henderson broke the stolen base record and picked up the plate.

I wasn’t even born yet when they put in Mt. Davis. I feel like I missed out on a lot, but even without that I grew really attached- I even like the coliseum to be honest. It’s not glamorous but it is our history and it was home. No bells and whistles just baseball and grit and spirit.
