49ers draft review:

1.31: Ricky Pearsall, WR.

I can't say I expected us to pick WR here lol, and if you told me before the draft we'd pick one over Dejean I'd think you're either fucking with me or a video of Rome Odunze smoking weed through a gas mask leaked during the draft. But I don't hate it, because even though we're keeping both Aiyuk and Deebo this year (barring something catastrophic) we're almost certainly trading Deebo before the next draft, and given our offensive core is aging we really need young players on low contracts to keep form. Pearsall in particular fits our scheme rather well, not as a Deebo replacement but as a really agile inside guy who can play outside, make quick cuts, and run routes very effectively. He's also elusive and tough enough to be a productive YAC guy, which is like our whole offense lol, and he can certainly block which receivers have to in this system.

I don't like grading stuff or whatever, especially this early in the process as we can't know not just how players will turn out, but how the front office plans to utilize them. So my grades will just be a pure "how much does this makes sense to me" meter.

2.64: Renardo Green, CB.

After our first round pick and given the sort of offensive linemen available, I was really hoping we'd trade up to get Rakestraw (who went 2.61 to the Lions who had a killer draft) who is IMO capable both outside and as a nickel; would allow us to flex him and Demo around early on, with Rakestraw ideally ending up outside when everything comes together for him. But Rakestraw went and we picked Green, who probably won't ever be an outside guy but has immense potential as a physical nickel and is an excellent tackler. He's quite good in man which I think we'll be running more of this season, especially with a player like Green lol as part of our weakness at it last year was our previous nickel... Some folks are probably calling this pick a reach since a nickel CB is one of those positions where you can find value later, but I think the front office was a bit traumatized and wanted someone they could trust and develop. idk i like it a lot

3.86: Dominick Puni, OG.

When we picked Puni, I was still in my "we have to pick a tackle please" phase and sort of just assumed we were going to be playing him as one due to my previously limited scouting of him. But obviously at this point it's very clear we see him as a long-term answer at guard that we can develop and hopefully start next year or even mid-way through this one. He moves well, has great footwork, pass-blocks very effectively, is a really smart player. He's prone a bit to getting beat on the sides and has poor arm length but those qualities and everything else I saw that I could slight him for is assuaged by the move to guard, so I honestly love this pick in every way. I'm really excited for him to contribute and I hope we pick a tackle next year lmao.

4.124: Malik Mustapha, S.

This dude is a freak. I hadn't watched him at all besides the FSU game where I barely noticed him given the ACC is generally pretty weak, but man is this guy strong and fast. Saw some stat about how his combined lift for bench/squat/clean is 1,300 which is just ridiculous for a safety, and has like a fucking 42 inch vertical which actually means something at this position. He ran a 4.52 at his pro day but was injured, and I bet he's more of a 4.45 guy by how he plays. The one knock I'll give him is that he's over-aggressive on his angles and misses tackles but jesus christ he could be quite good, and is especially good against the run so he'll be utilized in certain coverages even next year. Only reason this guy went this late is I think he's not as great in man coverage looks due to that over-aggression + a general avoidance of safety prospects for value purposes. Excited for him, and we needed the safety depth IMO.

4.129. Isaac Guerendo, RB.

A mid round RB for Kyle, this dude is quite fast and in our scheme will function as a home-run guy like Mostert or Breida were. He doesn't make cuts well and isn't very elusive, making him poor at maintaining momentum on runs where he can't just run straight by everyone. Thankfully in our reads he will often just be able to run straight through everyone, and I could see him running for a couple long touchdowns this year. Don't hate picking a RB given Elijah's injury history but I guess I just wanted an edge or a tackle as there were a couple available here that I would have liked. I could see him returning kicks if he does well at it in training camp.

4.135. Jacob Cowing, WR.

Cowing is our immediate Ray-Ray replacement and will most likely return punts for us this year. I REALLY like this guy, tough ass player who runs routes quite well and is super twitchy, fast and able to get past guys with little trouble. Super tiny and can't survive past first contact most of the time but neither could Ray-Ray and I think this guy'll be more productive in the same role. I really like this kid's attitude and he was a captain/team leader in college so I'm hopeful he'll produce. He's a bit redundant with Pearsall or how I envisioned his role for us this year specifically but as soon as we trade Deebo he'll have a solidified role and will contribute in special teams in the meantime.

6.215. Jarrett Kingston, OG.

Hadn't scouted this guy at all, looks like another quick short-armed tackle that we'll want to convert to guard. I like these reclamation projects and I just hope it'll work out lmao, he seems like a good kid from his post-draft interview. Definitely a mauler lineman.

I've refrained from making comps but this guy is literally just Kwon Alexander again lmao. He CANNOT tackle for shit but is great in coverage and is quite quick. Definitely the sort of linebacker we like and if he can figure out how to tackle (his tackling form is flawed and his angles are poor) then I could see him being an effective depth LB for us.

UDFAs are impossible to judge lol they're just such a crapshoot, but we picked up Terell Owens' son which is pretty cool I guess. Also picked up Drake Nugent who played center at Michigan and was effective, so hopefully he'll pan out.
