You just play your matches, maybe sometimes rotating for European competitions, and it doesn't feel the same way... before you realize you screwed random points your main competitor didn't, and you're 8, 10 points behind.

Madrid have also benefitted from letting the league slip away and instead focusing on the UCL, they won 2 leagues when they won those 5 UCLs. It helps resting your starters for the UCL games, Barça never did that as they always focused on winning everything.
