I read Warren Ellis' Ruins, for Marvel Comics ー Spoilers for the 2-issue story + basic Marvel heroes' origin stories.
||Ruins is basically a What if? scenario where literally everything goes wrong (in my headcanon, due to a butterfly effect caused by Ben "The Thing" Grimm getting out of the Marvel-1 voyage, thus preventing the Fantastic Four origin story from ever happening), resulting in a plethora of terrible events that range from The Hulk turning into a barely living, yet immortal mass of cancerous tumours to the Fantastic Four not surviving their mutations because Ben wasn't piloting the ship in order to escape before the cosmic radiation before it turned lethal, to Spider-Man actually getting a contagious, lethal disease instead of superpowers, to Magneto losing control of his powers and literally smashing himself flat by pulling an air plane into him.

I'm accustomed to creepy, gory stuff, but the sense of decay and the hyper-realistic art and sombre colours, as well as the simple yet effective narrative detailing a world that was about to become something so much more due to, in the work's words, Marvels changing it for the better, and seeing what a desolate and despairing hell it all becomes despite nothing else having changed at all, just a simple difference that sent everything spiralling downwards really made me feel kind of revolted, kind of sad. It's the first time I get this feeling in a while, so it's a bit shocking.

I'm adding a page that I think it represents very well how much of a hellscape it is throughout its 70-ish page run.||

Ruins ||It is good to some degree. It does what it sets out to do perfectly, but it also becomes kind of a gore fest that doesn't want to take a breather at reminding you "yes, it's that bad". I think it could have done without attempting to shock you as much. Either way, it's a short read, pretty comparable to picking up an Ito Junji piece in the sense you won't spend hours reading it and you kind of know what you're in for.||

Books of Magic (1990) ||You should read this though, I always find myself coming back to it. Not to disparage Harry Potter since I think it existing is a good thing (author not withstanding) but I feel like this is everything Harry Potter could have and tried to be. It captures this sense of adventure and mystery of the unknown like few things have for me. It's also much lighter than your previous read so it might help 😵‍💫. ||

||It's set in the DCU and uses some DC and Image characters like Zatana and Constantine, so you talking about Ruins reminded me of it lol. It follows this kid and his introduction into the world of magic. You should give it a read if you need some time to kill. Here's a very early on page that isn't too spoilery to maybe pique your interest.||
