The critic was once a fan but later decided that Carl had become "too comfortable". There is nothing inherently wrong with playing the protagonist in your own story, in fact, Jon was really personal with his role, and Carl's character is nothing like Jon in real life lmao, it's not egotistical. Carl is an asshole to his son that just wants to help in the kitchen, but Carl is oblivious and shuts his son out of his life before later realising throughout the movie that him and his son share a natural passion for food. we see his organic growth with his son to expressing the love for food they both share with each other, it's not an immediate "i bought a food truck and now things are great" either, the movie leans into it gradually. It's a movie about a burdened chef who relearns his passion for cooking with his son, and his life being better for it. Saying that Chef is bad for resolving the issues and the protagonist having a great life just because the protagonist was played by the writer and director is moot because it's like being completely unaware that it's a feel good movie to begin with||

Chef ||And this is all nice in theory. But the execution is just not good. The acting is subpar and the story itself is uninspiring. Cliches on top of cliches with nothing new or interesting to them. This was supposed to be a low point in his life and it just felt like he went on vacation and had a blast. There really seemed to be no difference in the character before and after he lost his job. You can tell in every scene he’s in he has to look like he’s the coolest, smartest, quickest guy there even if it’s supposed to be a “somber” or “serious” scene. His character is so forced and in your face and not in a way that you can appreciate. The supporting characters are literally just there for Jon to have more lines, if there was a way to make Chef without people they would have done so.||

Chef ||I understand he’s supposed to be a lovable asshole but he just came across as an obnoxious, pretentious, self-centered dick. I understand that the stereotype is that amazing chefs are assholes, they are obnoxious and pretentious. Jon’s character was missing grit, he made being a chef look like it was the easiest thing in the world. Also- the dialogue word vomit and unnatural. The worst scene in the movie (that I remember at least) has to be them in the truck and his son talking about them going viral or getting a bunch of followers or whatever. I’m sure there was more but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it and I’ve tried my best to block it out||

Chef ||I don't understand how you can say "he just went on a vacation and had a blast" when there's still literally 1 hour of movie before Carl bought the food truck where Carl is consistently portrayed as a bad person who needs to pay more attention to his son and be a better person. Him losing his job was just the catalyst, it happens like 10 minutes into the movie, it's not the only factor here. I'm not going to argue on the basis of acting or whatever. For me personally, acting has to be REALLY bad for it to be noticeably bad, and REALLY good for it to be noticeably good. In chef, the acting was just average.||
