Solaris (1972) ||is a frustrating film, to me. Tarkovsky is a brilliant visionary and that, of course, remains true of this movie. Solaris is less of a pure sci-fi and leans into human drama. The philosophical quandary presented is one that encourages contemplation. It’s intricate, transcendental, often times eerie. And I enjoy it quite a bit, for what it’s worth. However, there’s just not enough going on within it to justify its nearly three hour run time. The ending is absolutely perfect. And the romance between Kris and the tulpa of his deceased wife, Hari, materialized by the planet of Solaris itself, leaves the viewer with a lot to ponder. Overall, a very good film by arguably the greatest filmmaker who ever lived. It’s not Mirror or Andrei Rublev. But Tarkovsky’s response to, what he deemed, “shallow science fiction,” is an unsurprisingly compelling work of art dealing in human emotions and psyche, rather than spectacle.||

I think in this shows case it's to deconstruct the romanticized, traditional image of a knight we usually associate with medieval fantasy for a humbler, more grounded and "real" depiction. It's not all glamorous. Sometimes it's Dunk taking having diarrhea behind a tree, or Arlan fucking a woman before taking a piss in the grass outside.||

In May I flew to Hollywood to start looking for a new partner on the Cosmere. This is something I've done before, but this time it was different. I'd been off the market for many years, working with Epic and my friends there.

Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.

Join me for a livestream on Friday, probably 6pm mountain. I'll talk more then. But I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.

Mistborn book 1 ||Chapter 27|| ||OK, so Elend is definitely not a bad guy now that both Kelsier and Vin have spied on his group. At least, I hope that's the case and there's no future rug pull. The army completely falling flat on its face because of Yeden and Kelsier is pretty funny, but probably my least favorite plot point so far. And now Vin is wondering about what it would be like if Kelsier would take the Lord Ruler's place, all while people are being beheaded in what is essentially the town square. So, I'll continue to stick to my original theory: Kelsier takes over the Lord Commander's place. Whether he becomes evil as a side effect I'm not so sure. What really has me interested is this feeling Vin has whenever the Lord Ruler was present in his carriage (she had this feeling previously around a Steel Inquisitor I think, too) that Kelsier said is not possible. Vin is definitely special, possibly even the prophesied The Hero of Ages (I say that 'cause it's the title of the third book and the Lord Ruler referenced it in one of his writings).||

I will give a quick thought though concerning Mistborn. It is an overall 8/10 for me. Simple to read just like Stormlight in terms of diction and sentence structure. Good characters, which Brandon seems to excel at. But, like with Stormlight, Mistborn ||lacks on the worldbuilding front. He tells me there is worldbuilding, but never really fully dives into it as much as he could to make it come alive and envelop me. He gets partway there with both series.||

You can tell its a cheap adaption of a short story and it's pretty didactic because of that, like a surrealist soviet PBS Kids short, but it was a neat little curio. Always a fan of funky sci-fi animation with stories too ambitious for their own good

Half of the Russian animation I watch is like, Boomers and Gen Xers who saw Yellow Submarines creature designs and made that their entire personality. It rules, this type of film should make a comeback

Akira ||the film works because it abandons virtually all the b plots to hone in specifically on the story of Kaneda and Tetsuo without compromise. The world building surrounding it can feel overwhelming and confusing cuz they're two kids in a crazy political conspiracy but I wouldn't say the film feels like an unfinished story or anything, it's a complete package that the manga just adds additional information to||

I can't speak specifically to Akira, but I will say there are a lot of people who think if anything at all is cut from a movie from a book, it is immediately seen as bad. Which, that's why it is called an adaptation, somethings work better in a movie vs a comic or manga or book. The point, imo, is getting the essence of the property and characters

There are bad adaptations that cut the wrong things and those films/shows suffer for it, but you're just always going to have people who want the book to be completely 1 for 1 adapted and that shit aint feasible

Mistborn book 1 - Complete ||Overall, a solid story from beginning to end. Did not expect Kelsier to die, but it's clear in hindsight that Brandon was going for
the "death of the mentor" trope - died brutally too, so A+ for that. Vin was a great character and all her ball appearances were my favorite scenes; really loved her banter with Elend (adorable couple). Sazed was an all around stellar character, as well, along with his own Terrisman Feruchemy. I admit I did enjoy the final twists that A. Marsh was alive, and B. that the Lord Ruler was actually the person that hated the dude who was writing in the Logbook/Epigraphs. But, as a character? The Lord Ruler sucked ass. Boring as shit, even the name is an insult (which I assume is intentional from Brandon, but still). Inquisitor weakness was a bit lame, but I wouldn't know how to fix that. I am happy that overall there will be political complexity in the coming two books, or so I think based on how this one ends, and I'm excited to see what is in store with the Lord Ruler's "continual protection" no longer in place against what I assume is the coming Deepness. While nowhere near as good as Stormlight's first book, I still had a good time. As a side note, the magic system can be a bit annoying to keep up with in fight scenes.||

Mistborn book 1 and all of Stormlight ||I must be going crazy, 'cause I could've swore that either someone spoiled me or there was a character communicated with in the fourth or fifth Stormlight book that suggested they were Kelsier. Maybe I was just confused, but I'm going to assume that either Kelsier is getting resurrected in the next two books or that the evolved Mistraith Renoux dude was impersonating him in that Stormlight book.||

He's definitely not a perfect writer and there is plenty to criticize.

No other choice has one of my favorite set pieces in recent memory. Should watch for sure!

I like Sanderson a lot and enjoy his stuff, but he isn't the be all end all that a lot of people make him out to be

he got lucky and became ultra famous as a result. I think in his lectures even he admits to how much luck was on his side

He has a formula he follows and one he has made over years and years and it can lead to his books, imo, feeling a bit sterile

and so it gets easy to notice
