Dune, book 1 completed - 6/10: ||The book was fine. Little outside of the worldbuilding caught my attention, with my overall favorite subject matter being the Bene
Gesserit. For me, the book falls quite short on two fronts: 1. How Herbert writes. Switching POVs on the fly, utilizing colons so often to show that someone is going to talk, and what feels like a more tell and not show type of writing made it a bit cumbersome to get through. 2. Characters. They just fell completely flat; if you were to ask me what any of their personalities are, I'm positive I could not figure it out. The best I could guess at is they're all sentient cardboard with the ability to think introspectively and play mind games trying to think four steps ahead, especially Jessica and Vladimir. On that note, those two were my favorite characters. You could kill Paul off and I wouldn't care one bit. And Kynes was at least semi-interesting since he could've been an interesting lore-dump machine since the worldbuilding and lore were just about the only things sustaining me in this story. Until the end. I will admit, from the final conflict onwards my interest was peaked because for once there felt like real and very consequential drama, despite how fast paced it all was (yes, even when compared to the fall of house Atreides and Paul and Jessica almost losing their lives when first confronting Stilgar).||

||Speaking of pacing, I wonder if the book would be better split into two long books: the first focusing on the fall of house Atreides and the second focusing on Paul and Jessica's survival among the Fremen and the conquest over the Emperor - it's as if I don't have enough time spent on the second, and better, half of the book. Also, I suspect Herbert was trying to showcase concepts related to the Middle East with references to words like jihad, a dry desert locale, and other stereotypes (i assume the spice is a reference, just not sure what). I further suspect this book ise a product of its time, in that Herbert may not have had much other examples to follow in terms of large scale sci-fi novels or fantasy novels outside LOTR. Still, that does not excuse such poor characters. Now, I don't regret reading this, there is still interesting things to be gleamed from it, but I would also use this book as a teaching method for how not to write a story, especially on the character front.||

Dune book 1 ||That's all I can surmise I think too. For me, character almost always comes first, I tend to make them my priority. It's rare I break rank on that and fully enjoy a book such as with Neuromancer.||
