Sinners ||Phenomenal sound track and cinematography. A little too freaky for my liking in some spots. But Michael B. Jordan has absolutely earned his Best Actor nomination. I really liked the relationship between Sammie and the twins. Smoke was obviously the MVP of the movie. Remmick didn’t even appear until like 45 mins into the movie and I found him to be a super compelling antagonist. He was less downright evil and more so just twisted, which I can appreciate in a vampire movie. A little annoyed the Choctaw were shown for like 2 mins and never mentioned again, and was a little confused on how Stack and Mary survived but overall an excellent film.|| 8.5/10

||There's admittedly some interesting stuff in this movie. Some great sets and world design, and Charles Dutton is a pleasure. I think at least this edition was worth watching once.

But I would not call it a good movie by any stretch and it's so needlessly cruel and dark without purpose. Treating everyone around Ripley as props while dragging her herself through everything she's fought against because apparently there's no way for an assault survivor to ever move on.

Aimlessly retreading beats from the first two films without any of the subtlety that made them feel real the first time. Taking Bishop, a character meant to make her confront her prejudice, and recycling his face for an explicit bad guy so we cant trust or sympathize with it anymore. So much of it was just mean spirited and vile, and I don't think the prison being a stand in for hell really excuses that.||

Tldr, 2/5, has value in its own weird way and it stands out in the current sea of committee approved franchise slop, but I didn't like it. The notion that the Alien franchise probably should have stuck to comics and games after the first two movies is continuing to hold, granted I haven't seen Romulus yet

Its got an all star cast desperately trying to play something that reads like the script of a Buffy episode as genuine sci-fi horror and the film itself is shot like a 90s music video and none of it works

In my mind, I can't imagine it being a fulfilling watch in that sense. But I can imagine it being a fun watch despite that

They’re completely cohesive but the campaigns have things that might seem filler but configured in a way that a DnD campaign is, these people are professional storytellers though so their campaigns are great narratives that span a ton of characters, locations and themes

The shows are very configured towards simplifying the campaigns, also due to constraints of the medium they’re telling it in, with visual storytelling, especially Vox Machina which compresses HOURS upon HOURS of storytelling into a season of 12 episodes of 30 minutes each but Mighty Nein has more leeway and a generally more expansive story with one hour episodes for a season and a more leisurely approach to the story

DnD can do that and still be fun because episodes are long and shopping and items can be devoted some amount of time but yeah for a show it’s pretty boring (on paper)

One thing that’s advantageous for Critical Role is that they’re DnD players and they also understand, having worked in animation for years and years with decades in collective experience that a show that simplifies the campaigns also needs structure, character arcs and season-wide narrative arcs, it’s why Vox Machina is so fun to watch even for a newbie and I’m sure Mighty Nein will be a similar experience
