Batman Returns ||movie kinda presents all of Gotham's heroes and villains as nothing but victims and freaks. Maxwell Lord is the real corruption at the heart of the city, Batman's no different from the Penguin or Catwoman besides having the strength and support to overcome his grief, etc.

I like it as a different look at the characters. One where once you take a step back they feel like the only relatable people in Gotham, despite how over the top they are. It's just what this city does to people.||

Mask of the Phantasm ||nah its a weird time thing. It seems to have been actually years but its not conveyed properly. Her returning at the beginning of the movie is actually after all the stuff where her and her father run away to Europe. So its her returning, then a long weird flashback that you can't really tell is a flashback, to them becoming lovers before we finally find out why she left and you're left thinking "wait, this was all BEFORE that?". Then it explains that the stuff with the guy that keeps getting mistaken as batman was her father who returned home before his daughter. Then she comes back too and is standofish to bruce until hes escaping the police and she picks him up.

I get the time thing, but it actually is a bit confusing with the flipflopping without clearly conveying that we're in a flashback at all etc||

Fantastic Four First Steps ||I feel like this film wasn't necessarily DEATH by paper cuts but it definitely felt neutered by the final edit, like what we're seeing is the abridged theatrical cut of a much grander movie. And I was kinda fucking with it until the halfway point which is what makes it disappointing.

There's just a lack of follow through in the third act. For basically every facet of the movie. Ben might as well not be in it with the way his entire arc was truncated into 3 minutes of film time. What feels like the scene that should be the beginning of Silver Surfers arc leads right into a heroic sacrifice and change of heart that feels totally unearned. For all the hype for Galactus as a genuine god and a being beyond comprehension and the natural laws of physics the grand finale mostly treats him as a stumbling giant robot in a way that doesn't do his scale any justice. The global mob that wants to take Franklins head getting over the trolley problem because Sue makes a pre-canned speech feels hollow. Reed never really comes around to feeling like a father to Franklin, throughout the entire last encounter he's still doing everything cuz Sue wants him to and not from his own volition.

It goes on and on. Just can't live up to all the things it was fast forwarding through the first 20 minutes to set up. And it's a shame because the pretense behind it all, this celebrity superhero family being forced to confront an impossible cosmic problem as scientists because its space powers outclass theirs, while none of the citizens they protect even support them, IS captivating. Maybe a bit too big brained for the Marvel formula, I guess.||

||Even this cool retro futuristic world they build ends up being little more than set dressing. I don't expect the film to politically analyze what a world like this looks like or comment on what the "idyllic mid 20th century America" it's calling back to actually was like, it's a fuckin Marvel movie and it's amazing they even had the self awareness to show a black woman in power to handwave that. But when it's panning around the world and every other city is recognizably the same as our reality, and when it's spending so much of its run time in like 3 rooms of the Baxter building and outer space, it just ends up feeling like a funky version of New York City and little more. Novelty quickly wore off.

Maybe if there were more scenes set outside (and not in ruins) it'd make more impact. Seeing more of the civilians lives, and skirmishes with other villains like Red Ghost. Things I already know they filmed and gutted lol. Would love to see a directors cut, but Disney doesn't operate that way.||

FF movie ||Yeah I think it’s becoming general consensus that the editing and Final Cut of this movie clearly has its issues. And apparently there’s not going to be any directors cut so? Very strange. And also absolutely agree about Galactus feeling more like a giant robot in the final battle rather than a cosmic force. But that’s kind of par for the course when it comes to cosmic threats in comic shit so I guess I can mostly hand wave it. I think this movie is really good almost entirely off of visuals and vibes alone, with some fairly decent characterization with Sue and Johnny’s characters in particular for me. But yea, clearly there’s quite a bit missing from this movie that stops it from being amazing||
