Finished The Whale. ||I think this was a powerful movie. The main character’s arc of reconnecting to his family was moving. His insistence to his students to make honest essays that expresses their real selves and wanting to make his life meaningful, knowing where his life will end up soon due to the bad choices he’s made in his life, it hurts a lot. At the least, whether the ending had his fate end his life or continue living, he managed to change his daughter for the better. And I think that’s what makes the film powerful. ||

Laudna absorbing the stone breaks the tether of that addiction to the stone and Imogen lashed out ||

Beneath the Planet of the Apes ||The first act of this movie was really weak. I didn't need a recap of the Planet of the Apes premise with a less interesting lead character to go through the same journey and discoveries at breakneck speed, makes the apes look dumber and took time away from the setup for the actual story.

I think it would have been way more effective to focus on Zira's perspective, returning to the city to see the events of the first one leading to a militarization, while Taylor's destiny took him towards the heart of the Forbidden Zone. The lack of confidence in the audiences ability to care about the film without a strong white man on screen to be their surrogate at all times is kinda a massive detriment that held it back, and I feel like it knows this cuz it adds in a ton of poorly directed action during that segment to keep your attention.

But oh my fucking GOD the second half of that film was a wild ride. Ending is hysterical and I love it for that, instead of building a thoughtful and ominous subtext like the first one they just give up and drop a cartoon anvil to the head in a way no movie today could ever get away with||

Son of Godzilla ||This movie actually had the makings of one of the better Showa era films despite it's sorta lackadaisical tone, but it doesn't quite make it to the finish line.

The whole pitch of a Lost World story where the monster is learning how to be a single father and barely gives a shit about what the humans are doing is funny, the Harryhausen looking insects are some of the most convincing from this decade, and I want to bully Minilla. The pairing of a high stakes action movie plot for the humans with a low stakes slice of life plot for the monsters fits Fukuda's tone a lot better than whatever the previous film was going for.

But the setup with the scientists takes too long to get going and has a more serious tone than the entire rest of the movie so it's a bit slow to start, and it's the rare Godzilla movie where the final battle fuckin sucks. They NEED to stop relying on the string shot effect, it's already Mothras thing in other films and overplayed there. The human storyline also comes to a total halt at the end which is pretty typical in these things but the emotional core of the story was the girls friendships with Minilla and the reporter and I wish that had more of a sendoff. Final scene was excellent for what that's worth.

Excited for Honda to be back for the next movie but I still gotta watch Atragon and King Kong Escapes to complete the entire canon before Destroy All Monsters so who knows when I'll get to that.||

i'm confident he would've been done years back if not for what I believe was a large rewrite sometimes after that 2015 post. Aside from that, god only knows what stops him. It's probably a simple combination of age, the show overtaking the books, and the fact that, the current state of the story is extremely complex and probably mega hard to work with. I think because he's a gardener instead of a planner in his writing style, it makes the current state of the story very hard to work with.

Finished both seasons of the animated series Pantheon. Major spoilers ||I thought it was a pretty intriguing series due to its interesting take on humans living in digital world simulation. Nothing particularly mind-blowing about its approach to it, but it definitely went balls to the walls crazy towards the end of season 2 (The protagonist being a god of the simulation was one thing I didn't expect and found really cool). ||

||The characters overall didn't blow me away, as most served a sole purpose to forward the unraveling of the digital world, but at least the main characters Maddie and Caspian were fleshed out very well. I like how the two debated each other consistently on the importance of mortality and what it means to live as a digital human being. Their interactions brought brief intriguing thoughts on the tech we have today and how it can easily be used for control if lead by the wrong people who want to control the internet for selfish gain.||

Finished DUNE movies ||Pretty interesting. I'm not quite confident in my reading of these films, but one particular interesting part was the use of religion and world-building that pushes the protagonist's journey forward. Because the world is so driven by spice and factions ruling over another to fight for the resource AND because that world pushes people of religion to seek and push for a "Messaiah" of sorts, the protagonist is put into a situation that propels him to become a "hero" that stops the House Harkonnen from gaining control. However, the way he grows to be that "hero" is unconventional and intriguing. He speaks harsh towards the people that follow him and goes through violent means to end the Harkonnen. Vengeance drives his path forward and he's definitely not a person to look up to as a heroic role model. In future films, I can see him becoming as bad of a person as Baron if he's continued to lead in these aggressive ways. I suppose I'm somewhat looking forward to Dune Messaiah in a couple of years to see how his path goes. This is one book movie series that I'm liking more than others. ||

Finished squid games s2

Squid games season 2|| I think even season 1 being immensely popular it was so for a reason. It was so pretty tight in it’s writing, maybe the only thing I would deem unnecessary was the organ harvesting stuff but even then that’s pretty cool in the context of the actual guards themselves making what they can out of the game and the ending itself being a bit sloppy. Anyways all that to say while I enjoyed season 2 I thought it really spread itself thin this season. There was so many characters for no reason lmfao and I could only tell you like who half of them are. The idea of the frontman being in the games is cool but he does like nothing for the whole season except when he kills 2 single guys at the very last episode. I guess it will be cool in season 3 when gi-hun gets revealed that he was a traitor but that’s really the only thing it did. Thanos was fun but shallow, and the only other character i really cared for Hyun-ju which I felt was really well written. It’s cool that they acknowledge that she is trans and they explicitly open up on that but so many times the “token” character or however you want to phrase it can be reduced down to just their label and she was actually just badass with her being ex military and shit and also that moment during those minigames where she says she’ll kill the girl before her gods do😭. I’m not trans so I can’t say a whole lot on that aspect but it still just felt pretty cool and she was cool

But it just felt like everyone was dumber in this season. Season 1 everyone felt so smart in their actions and you could really feel why or what they were doing and it feels less like that this season. Maybe its just because of the overabundance of characters.||

Putting that aside, Audillard is a hack who can’t frame songs or sequences and can’t even be bothered to create a story that is makes for a good musical, the songs are just so badly framed and composed and directed, it’s a bland looking mess.

Emilia Perez attempts for a telenovela-esque reality where wild shit happens but what doesn’t ground it is any lack of human emotion or interiority, the film isn’t interested in the actual human beings it depicts, so why should I be interested in it?

You watch Mulholland Drive and you FEEL for the people in it, for the characters being depicted and their human emotions, Lynch knew how to depict real emotions and realities of the human condition and the vast potential for good or evil within the systems put in place by humanity

Or take the Mad Max films for example, utterly heightened reality and not relatable in the slightest in terms of lived world and situations but what makes them good? It’s how Miller depicts character and emotion through action, human beings put into a world and still acting and having emotions

Jentry Chau versus the Underworld Episode 9 ||One part of show's character writing feels awkwardly written. At the start, the story kinda rushes itself with the way Jentry's grandma is written when it comes to building up the story and setting up drama for the protagonist. The grandma comes across as very incompetently stupid with zero redeeming qualities (who's primarily responsible for killing her Jentry's parents with poor planning and terrible persuasiveness towards Cheng's deals) that I have no empathy towards her. She feels like a plot device to get the show going more than anything. Though, the rest of the cast is written fine. Jentry's whole deal of wanting to be a hero versus being a normal teenager and the aggressive power-reactive reactions she has towards things not going her way is a bit relatable and interesting to follow. She's sort of an interesting mix of Spiderman and Mob when it comes to character conflicts.||

||It's probably me having grown up as an older young adult now, but the sense of humor here doesn't work for me at all. I think I've fallen out of humor that's Gravity Falls-like. Overall, so far, I am somewhat enjoying this show. The action animation and protagonist growth is pulling me in more than any part of the show. ||

Finished Jentry Chau versus the Underworld ||This is starting to cook. The invasion of the demons in Jentry's highschool and the battle against the demon that controlled the mom was pretty intense. The development for Jentry here was good, and I'm happy that she could break her shackles and become her own person by facing the battles head-on. Having the grandma be sacrificed during this battle in the last episode was the right decision. Personally, I'm happy that a character written in a frustrating way is out of the show. I hope she doesn't come back to life, her role is done. I feel this show can finally spread its wings with a potential new season, that is if it happens. If this is all we get, then I'm content. Jentry's arc made the show worth watching I suppose.||

I was so happy, but then I had to gripe with the reality that these patients' awakenings were only temporary later on. And it broke my heart. When Leonard had to say goodbye to the woman for the last time because of his disease and the woman responded with a dance, I was so sad. Very touching movie. ||
