perfect days ||i think it will always feel performative and sanitized to you no matter what, just by sheer virtue of being a movie - no matter how gritty or real or dark or otherwise not-cute you want to make it, it'll always be the slightest bit removed from actually depicting real life by any number of directorial choices. on a similar note, i don't think hirayama's character or status was ever really "glamorized" - people treat him with decency as he goes about his workday, sure, but the thing that makes him a protagonist is pretty much completely isolated to his own self-imposed actions. i don't really think you could mark him as a protagonist or a good person by any of his direct day-to-day relationships (pretty much just when he gives his coworker money? i guess?) and it really only took until niko showed up for any sort of real character-defining story moments to take place. i think i totally wouldn't've minded if the entire movie were like the first third, where hirayama himself just goes about his life day after day, and minor secondary/tertiary plotlines happen ambiently around him.

i'm not saying i necessarily disagree with your points, but i don't think it knocks the movie down as many points as you want to knock it down and i don't think it's committing too many sins as a film by (idk how to better put this) "phoning it in" on the realism or substance of the movie. i agree that it's a hollow movie, but it's fine that it's hollow and i really don't mind it as much||

I'm specifically speaking to things I've seen other films do better - which is grounding the character in reality WHILE delivering a message through them. The contrivances of MC were particularly overt to me so I thought to make a point of it.||

||on a similar note, i don't think hirayama's character or status was ever really "glamorized" - people treat him with decency as he goes about his workday, sure, but the thing that makes him a protagonist is pretty much completely isolated to his own self-imposed actions||
||The only part I'd say that was glamorized was his job, which went from depressing and tedious to instead a depressing "satisfying videos!" account on Instagram; not some huge improvement but still a marked one that fails to display the actual nature of the job in a meaningful way given the later condemnation of it in the film. I specifically said that his position was not idealized, but instead "made cute", which is to say every aspect of his life was a bit unnatural and overly-witty, and not grounded in any sort of meaningful way that would have allowed me to take in this naturalistic messaging about routine. I don't really see how whether he was a good person or not was relevant. ||

||If the entire film was just the first third, it'd still contain a lot of the issues I had, while losing any of the messaging... which maybe would have resonated more due to taking itself less seriously, but wouldn't have really said anything poignant. ||

Shogun ep 2 || I think there is a lot to still know, but from what's revealed so far. That ship seems to be the main way of Japan to trade and that is what that Japanese lord is getting as profit. Delaying that ship is delaying his business.
It probably ties in with the supply of Ronin that Portugals are carrying out to the base of Macao, which I don't think that Japanese Lord knows yet. Or maybe he knows but he doesn't care as long as it makes him profit.
