@haughty ruin was just talking to a friend who really liked perfect days, ||the short of it was that I felt the film was hollow, observing a menial laborer rather than depicting him without a sensible reason why, dehumanizing and turning him into an abstract message in a contrived and unsympathetic way. I get that the film may have been setting out to portray routine and finding purpose from living in the moment rather than like, some specific perspective of labor, but it's just too cute... the drama, the ambiguity in their thoughts/statements (which I enjoy in a vacuum to be fair but it doesn't sit right when surrounded by the rest), the pure depiction of the job which isn't exactly pretty but made far more satisfying than reality, none of it gave the film a purpose to be beyond "here's this guy's routine.” Was it a critique of modern culture? Not really, as the main character's position was not really idealized in the sense that it was promoted, even if there were some snide depictions of the youth. Was the film eschewing all social commentary and going for a character study? Certainly not, and if that were the case then the film would be incredibly pretentious. Was it supposed to be, as I stated before, a depiction of how we all find purpose in our positions of society? If yes then why do it through an ex-alcoholic in a destitute position? It undermines your messaging by shaming the profession, of which it's naively unaware of anyways due to the ACTUAL workers who perform the job: immigrants, not rich failsons finding purpose through denial. I thought it was shot beautifully and that the acting was great, but that it failed due to delivering a message that lacked intimate context from each aspect of it. ||

||I honestly think I would have enjoyed the film considerably more if the main character was simply a salaryman who possessed what for all intents and purposes was a job to be satisfied with, yet still felt the need to act through this intricate routine as a means of actualization. ||

The thing is that, I view Sátántangó much more as a cinematic masterwork that embodies filmmaking as a pure art form. Yes it’s harrowing, and bleak, and above all else, more long and arduous than any single film that I’ve ever watched, but while it’s equally as frighteningly and disturbingly realistic as Come and See , one film has had such a vividly intense impact on the way I view war as a whole that it, no joke, changed my entire perspective on life and history. Come and See is so much more terrifying than any horror flick I’ve watched. Scenes from the movie are quite literally burned into my memory, to the point that I don’t require a rewatch for Klimov’s desired effect. Sátántangó , while sharing some similarities, in regard to it’s impact on me, and the alarming reality of human history, didn’t hit as close to the stark horrors of humankind as Come and See did, for me, personally.

And I know it sounds ridiculous to say, because, again, both films are equally as realistic and horrible. So I do want to stress that both are incredibly difficult watches, with Sátántangó only being accentuated by it’s near 8 hour runtime, but when it comes down to which of the two I would “enjoy” rewatching, and I’m putting heavy emphasis on the quotations there, Sátántangó takes the cake.

Mind you, both films are in my top five favorites of all time. And I don’t intend at all to dismiss Satantango’s effectiveness

I’m sure most people would rather watch the 3 hour film over the 8 hour film, and that it mostly comes down to that

As someone who didn't know anything about Shogun, I absolutely loved the first two episodes. The visuals and worldbuilding are incredible, the plot is fascinating all around, the cast of characters are great with some incredible dialogue. This show is quite violent as well like with ||beheadings and a person being boiled alive||.

I think it was also fascinating that the characters ||are really talking in Portuguese in Japan but we hear them talk in English||. Btw, the official Shogun podcast is great too.

Only 2 episodes in but Shogun is already one of the best shows I have watched in some time.
