The Last Jedi ||Luke Skywalker started dealing with worse than what happened to his academy. ||

||The original story saw him dealing with worse than these mistakes. His father was Darth fucking Vader And he forgave that man and kept hope that he was still good and brought him back from the dark side. Brought arguably the most legendary sith of all time back from the dark. ||

|| But his mistake, what happens that causes everything to go to shit, is the worst part of it all. Luke decides in a moment that possibly killing his nephew was the better answer to something he saw in the future, he decided that Snoke had already gotten to him.||

||BUT HIS FATHER WAS DARTH FUCKING VADER. That is my biggest problem with his character, it isn't that I expect him to be infallible, but this is like going from forgiving a school shooter to feeling like you're worthless because your son stole some gum. It doesn't make any sense to put this kind of a tragedy on Luke and call that enough to break him when he didn't break in front of Darth Sidious and Vader, and still pulled Vader back from the dark. ||

||But his first instinct was to almost kill Ben? Come on, that wasn't even his first instinct when Vader was actively threatening to kill his sister.||

There is 0 room for that to be the reason for anything that happens to him in the sequels, decades later, when it was the first thing he ever overcame as a Jedi.||

TLJ ||it was never insinuated that holdo was potentially going to be a bad guy bean, thats the flaw in thinking about it in that way, the actual strategy holdo uses is quite effective and smart and holdo is only ever looked at from the perspective of a supremely arrogant poe dameron who doesnt have a clue about what the fuck matters the most to the aliance (granted, the entire thing was dragged out and i think holdo shouldve been shown in a more sympathetic light to make the turnaround his harder)||

TLJ ||Holdo was absolutely insinuated to potentially be a bad guy. That was the whole point of that conflict, to create the drama and question of what's going on and why things are happening. The strategy Holdo uses is terrible because there's no point in it. There's no point in not telling anyone on board what's going on, there was literally no reason not to tell Poe everything that was happening given who he was in the resistance and his standing with Leia. It was a completely forced conflict that was only there to give Finn and Rose extra time pressure for their sequence, it added nothing to the film and didn't provide any benefit to any characters.||

TLJ ||Even the directing for her character made her look like she was just trying to placate people and lie while doing something underhanded or cowardly, even if not outright bad. She doesn't look good at all until after Leia gets back up and talks to her. That entire plot line was the second worst thing about the movie, only behind the mistake of Luke's character regression and his completely illogical choice to become a hermit||

TLJ ||The simplest way to fix this unfortunately doesn't exist in the movie. What Holdo did would've been great if there had been any implication or hint at there being a spy or a mole in the resistance. That's the entire way they try to frame things, but even when Leia is telling Poe about it, they never bring up "She didn't know who to trust" or anything like that. That would've legitimately been a huge first step in correcting it, but it's not there. We're just supposed to accept that she thought she was doing the right thing letting a mutiny happen on the ship when the guy doing it had nothing but the absolute best intentions and every single reason to justifiably do what he did.||

rise of the skywalker ||finn and poe dont do even those things in rise of the skywalker, they have nothing on their flesh that the audiences can chew on empathetically and it only makes the experiences with them and rey more shitty because rey is similarly given nothing to do other than to have her shoehorned in a macguffin hunt and a twist that can only be summarized to be bullshit. Her being palpatine's grandchild is forced, her relationship with kylo is butchered (i think the last jedi did a good job on the push/pull these two have on each other but the rise of the skywalker only makes that bullshit prolonged and bad), kylo's potential as a villain is absolutely destroyed because of this relationship and it generally just becomes a chore for the audience to follow these shitheads into this with nothing to do. Poe's past (?) is explored in order to have it do nothing, finn finds a girlfriend?? that character is fuckin weird and nonsensical, i dont understand the point of her being in the story and her relationship to finn||

TLJ ||And then even worse, when he pulls a gun on her she STILL doesn't tell him what's going on. Clearly if there's any kind of spy or mole danger this guy would have just proven himself to not be it||

Rise of Skywalker ||Oh I agree with most of this, but it had to be this way because Johnson didn't set up anything concrete and Disney didn't handle the production well at all. The only thing they could've done is make Kylo a main villain, but Star Wars is a redemption story. Him being redeemed was something they seeded even in the Last Jedi.||

||Poe and the rest being super sidelined also made sense, but once again Johnson didn't give them anything to do at the end of The Last Jedi either. The most we have is Poe leading the resistance potentially, but there's not much he can really do with that position to be fair to the character||

||The movie tells us no such thing, we're only told that Snoke had already gotten to him. Ben still had a lot of good left in him, which is how we're introduced to his character with Snoke pretty much. It's actually impossible that Luke felt more evil than ever but couldn't feel the good in Ben as well, especially when ben wasn't even Kylo yet and it was that event that fully turns him.||

||Luke never says Kylo's more evil or darker than anything. What he says is it was beyond what he'd ever thought it would be, which is fair since he was looking at basically a child. It's never anywhere near even Vader, which is literally Kylo's struggle as a character in the Force Awakens.||

rise of the skywalker ||rey being a nothingburger legacy related character destroys what relatability she has at least in the last jedi, finn and poe dont have any agency like they did in the last film, the relationship between kylo and rey is only fuckin destroyed (it was actually interesting in the last jedi) with the push and pull dynamic only being annoying because its so badly written, a shitty comeback from a villain in palpatine destroyed an actual chance at redemption for kylo that was not a sudden shift and enlightenment bullshit that he gets in this movie and only makes the snoke stuff weirder and somehow so bad that its laughable (as if a single snoke was enough, we have clones that were created by palpatine in the worst twist ever written as is palpatine's existence in this movie), richard e grant character shafts general hux from the story (what a shame) and contributes absolutely nothing, all of these are faults of the writing that terrio and abrams did, nothing to do with what johnson did, these guys took what johnson did and twisted it further until it was a piece of shit movie without coherence or structure to it||

Star Wars Sequels ||This doesn't work when we're talking about a Luke with decades of experience after overcoming these qualities. This isn't a trainee or a padawan who's fresh to it, or even Luke just barely stepping onto the path. This was the grandmaster who'd started his academy and was now training others. Luke didn't have these flaws in a way that could overcome him anymore.||

Jedi masters just don't have this flaw in pretty much any Star Wars media around this time period. They don't get overcome by emotion in that way, and they're specifically taught not to let visions of the future produce that kind of reaction in them. The kind of flaws that masters have generally tend toward unknowing arrogance, despair or overestimating darkness, but not a knee jerk reaction to kill a child because they sense what might be evil.
