So I was rereading Impel Down, one of my favorite arcs in the series, and found myself reminiscing about how much of an MVP Bon Clay was. He saved Luffy numerous times throughout the various levels, leaping gracefully towards danger for his friend. Sure, he was justifiably scared when Magellan appeared and ran away, but it was a fear that he had to overcome and he did for Luffy in the end. He cheered Luffy on and raised a chorus of motivation down in the secret level just for him, roaring out that he would never accept Luffy’s death like this. And Luffy didn’t die, thanks to Bon’s encouragement. If not for Bon’s final sacrifice at the finale, Luffy and the escapees would’ve never made it to Marineford. Sure, it was later revealed he was fine and running Level 5.5 in place of Emporio, but I can’t help but wonder what might’ve been if he became a Strawhat nakama, because he more than earned it.
