even though their ideals were quite different, they became fast friends. Beluga even built WB's ship, the Moby Dick
however, Beluga's act of betrayal and abandonment to his crew could not be left unnoticed. he offered Beluga a choice. either WB could hand him over to the government, or he could join his crew. Beluga still has a sense of honor left, but he was still a coward at heart. He begged WB to instead tell the government he had killed him, saying "I would rather live and be a coward than die in such a shameful way!"
WB eventually agreed, knowing full well the government would execute Beluga for his pirating, agreed that letting him live could at least give him the opportunity to redeem himself. Then he departed, telling the press he had killed the famous pirate Shel Beluga, wielder of the Yari Yari no Mi.
Then Shel Beluga went back into hiding, training for years to regain his pride and his status under a different name someday
and then he eventually meets Luffy, who immediately is hostile towards him after hearing his tory for leaving his crew- his friends- behind. The battle is, indeed, epic.
