Practice. And lots of it. The biggest things you can do is practice the fundamentals: 1. Study Anatomy 2. Study perspective 3. Study composition. Having even the most basic understanding of those 3 can help you better create something from your imagination. But the most important thing is to try. Just put pen to paper and start trying to draw something, anything, you desire. The more you do it, the better you will get.

Shading and light gets much more complicated than this but veryyy basically
Planes that face away from the light = in shadow
Try observing objects around you. Move them around and observe how the shadows change with the light source. If those are two hard to draw, try to simplify it into less shapes in your head before trying the real thing again. You can learn buddy

anyway uhhh so carpet doesn’t have a uniform surface. Matte materials like that will have a lot of places to diffuse the light that hits it and soften up the transition between light and shadow because of its texture. I’d personally think more in terms of trying to create the texture instead of shading it “correctly”

Don't worry about people stealing your art; you can always make more. People will try to "steal" no matter what you do. You only need to worry if they start making money off of your art by selling prints or pitching it to companies.

You are off to a strong start. Here are some tips: 1. The whites of the eyes are usually not as bright as you think they are and can even take on the hue of the nearby skin tone at times (yours are a little too bright). 2. Your overall value is a little too bright on the face and a little too dark on the eyebrows. 3. You lack just a little bit of color in the cheeks; the photo ref has slightly more rouge in it. 5. As a general tip squint your eyes to see the value relations of anything you are studying or copying. What I mean by that is to squint your eyes slightly and see how dark the darkest darks are compared to the lightest lights compared to the mid-tones to help you better judge how bright or dark certain colors need to be (you can look up tips from the late and great Richard Schmid on Google, as well, and possibly find similar tips from him, who I referenced a lot when painting portraits).

If you squint your eyes carefully and really look you can see just how bright your face is when compared to the photo ref.

this book is my bible. it may be pretty expensive nowadays ever since the artist passed and there has been a second edition printed called Alla Prima II, which I also think is expensive. this is a rare moment where I would actually encourage someone to find a digital copy since it may not be affordable by normal circumstances (and the artist can no longer financially benefit from its sales).

but if it is affordable, go ahead and buy it from his website (i believe his wife runs it now)

oh also, for next time, i'd recommend using the same background color too, as it will help you judge the values better. a mid-tone greyscale technically can help with that, which is what you currently have, but copying the image 1:1 simply help you judge things better
