So, I just got into clip studio earlier today because my drawing tablet gave me a free 2 year plan for the pro. However, I'm struggling to really navigate around it and know what tools to use for shading, coloring in (or ways I can just paint bucket shit in), and etc. I don't really know what brushes or "subtools" in the software are really good fo any of those either. I formerly used krita for not too long, and for shading and coloring I don't really know how to make these clip layers like I did on krita for shading. Do you have an answer to all or most of these things I need help with?

Haha, brushes depend on style so that's very individual (which I'm in pito's dms for that :V) and shading is a matter of interface, it's hard to find at first all the tools (luckily I know where they are) I can only answer like specific questions ^^

There’s no “best brush” as carp said, it just depends on what you like. G pen is great for lineart, sketch brush can be the round one or the pencils they have available, asset store also has great ones.

Secondly, you can do either cel shading or more realistic shading, you’d just have to watch tutorials and play around with it and learn it yourself, there’s no quick answer.

while prismacolor are water based

I would say go with Polychromo if you want pastel type

but I recommend Prisma bc its much easier to blend for people who are starting traditional

Those are the brands I’ve used the most (Strathmore esp) and they’ve worked out for me. There’s dozens of brands, you could deliberate about the best thing to get forever but you’ll never know what you like most until you try it

That scan has a high enough quality though where I can kind of make out the paintbrushes brushstrokes, that helps a lot actually

No matter what you do, you’ll be working to be noticed alongside people that are younger or have been doing it longer than you’ve ever even considered trying it. There is no path you can go down that you won’t struggle with to some degree. You kinda have to pick the problems you want

Keeping it a buck there have been many points this year where I felt like I could never achieve anything I wanted to in art. I just couldn’t grasp this concept, or all these drawings wouldn’t turn out right, or there’s no way I could ever connect with so and so.
But then I remembered the “safe” thing I tried to pursue. I could barely get up to go to class. I turned in assignments a month late. I could barely do my own projects. If I was stressed about art this year, I was inconsolable about whether or not I could do this. So I stopped and went all in on pursuing illustration.
Drawing I can do all the time, even when I don’t feel like it. Because even when I don’t feel like it, I can be content in the act of drawing. I like to draw. So for as long as I can, I will pursue it.
