it also helps to study real eyes and realize that they are simply sphere that sit inside the socket of the skull. The lids wrap around the spherical shape of the eyeball. You can cheat this with anime styles, but then you have artists like Miura who draw more realistic eyes where you can feel the roundness of them. Good work all the same dude!

No. Never grow out of it. I'm a working professional in the entertainment industry with 12 years under my belt. I know guys in their 50s and 60s that use reference. I know many professionals across all disciplines who are paid a shit ton of money for their work. We all use reference. Very few don't outside of Kim Jung Gi or someone who just draws the same stuff over and over again.
